Bus driver jailed for attack on cyclist

He seems to be behind the bus, when it slows and veers right before it attacks him like a killer whale.

Just watched the video again; it looks like the cyclist is actually in front of the bus. Looks like the driver got pissed that the cyclist was slowing him down; eventually the cyclist tried to get over to the right, the driver says "You ain't gettin off that easy!" and knocks him out. I'm sure there's more to the story than that...but that's what it looks like to me

Abosolutely ridiculous. A guy in bike clothes and a helmet on a 20-30 lb bike is not a threat to someone surrounded by a 10 ton bus.

Like I said the bicyclist could have made a threatening gesture towards the bus player.

One gesturing as if they have a gun during a possible argument can be perceived as threatening to most humans. And add some verbal threats in there who knows.

We tend not to have those problems here. If anything the driver was probably peeved at the cyclist being in the middle of the road.

This is a real strech, Jauqo. :scowl: I do agree that some cyclists create a hazard to themselves by acting and riding inappropriately. More often, I see drivers act maliciously towards cyclists without provocation. A cyclist will ALWAYS loose a battle between a bicycle and a car/truck/bus. The bus driver in this situation essentially - and intentionally - pulled the trigger on a deadly weapon.

I get the part where the driver could have been provoked / frustrated, but I don't think that justifies ramming a cyclist with several tons of steel you're paid to drive responsibly. Heck, it's your duty as a citizen to act responsibly.

I don't think anger is even important in the discussion. You don't reduce the judgement on attempted manslaughter because the guy's angry. Would this be in comparison to "Happily attempted manslaughter" ?

Looks like the cyclist provoked the bus driver, intentionally riding in the busses path. Not that that would excuse anything.

I'm not sure where you see any provoking in the video.

I don't know how different the laws are in the UK, but in the US, a cyclist has the same rights (and responsibilities) on the road as any other vehicle. This includes the right to ride in a traffic lane.

This fact is commmonly misunderstood (by both sides), and is often at the base of issues between cyclists and drivers.
