Buying my first bass amp for gigging.

I know not to use instrument cable. But if an amp had been used with instrument cable, would it be damaged?

More than likely it would be. There's a lot of current coming out of an amp's output, especially most modern bass amps. Think about how thin the core wire on an instrument cable is, then imagine putting a high voltage electrical charge through it... Chances are it would fry the cable & short out.

That is the hazard with using guitar cables for speakers, but if it did short out then the amp wouldn't go any more. It's less than ideal, but if it goes ok it probably hasn't been harmed so far.
