BYB - Birth Year Basses

Pics or it didn't happen. Of the bass, not your birth!

It's actually light, and plays crazy good!

So, I'm just old enough that the concept of a Birth Year Bass makes sense to me. Gen X or whatever. I'd love to have a 1968 EB2. But what about the TB members who are Millenials? If we agree that their birth year would be 1980 - 1999. What would the coveted BYB be for them? My daughter was born in '02 so I can't ask her this one.

I'm curious what stellar 93 basses are out there

^^THIS^^ pretty much. But, in my case it would be a 1951 model - and it would have to be left handed, as well. I've actually looked for one, but... the tiny handfull that were made, are all Custom Order Specials, and the ones that are/were for sale? Well, expensive is putting it mildly. Several years ago, somebody had a '51 Fender lefty bass for sale. Original case; case candy; hang tag and order sheet/bill of sale. The bidding started at $165,000... and it was sold in a week. Not to me, however...:wideyed: As for the original question? If it were me... A Rick 4003, or an Alembic something; pickings were slim for really good lefties in that time frame, IIRC...

I have, entirely coincidentally, a birth year 1951 Kay C1.

In 1952, the choices were just a few less than what you can get today. And frankly, I wouldn’t want want any that were on the market.

If, like me, you were born in early 1951 then you may find a birth-year 1951 Precision Bass. But not a birth year and birth month P-bass, since it appeared in the fall. We will always be older than the electric bass. OK Boomer.

I think my lightweight MIJ swamp ash 2014 P-bass models the 1956 version though. In 1951 the pickup was not split.

I got this Musicmaster with the intention of getting a birth year bass. It was advertised as a '72 but the stamp on the neck reads Mar 8 1973. I like this bass so much I don't care that its a year off. It plays like a million bucks and weighs 7lbs 4 oz. It has a real woody tone and takes effects well. I always get compliments from the sticker I put on the pickguard. So, it's not the birth year bass I thought I was getting, but it's a bass I feel lucky to own.
