BYB - Birth Year Basses

Never really thought about a BYB. But upon searching, these look interesting:

I suppose if I was gonna do it, I’d look for something from Japan, something I’d actually play like a P or a J.

Uncle K, I grew up very near Erie, PA. If growing up was what that was.
Hey me too! How near is “near?” General McLane HS and Edinboro U grad here!

This thread is interesting. I've searched a lot for an 86 bass that I wouldn't have to spend a fortune on. I think I settled on getting a G&L sometime this year. Seems to be the best quality/price value in that year for a killer bass. I'm glad other people do this cause I thought I was nuts wanting a BYB.

I bought mine this year.
I’ve had a couple guitars that came close (a 1975 Gibson Les Paul custom and a 1976 Gibson Explorer) but I finally picked up a 1974 Fender Mustang.
I really like it.View attachment 3863410 View attachment 3863412

My first bass (still have it) is a similar-era Mustang that might be my birth year. Happened by accident, because I bought it before the interwebs and serial numbers were easy to research, and the shop wasn't sure of the year.

Did yours come with the bridge mute pads? I've never seen a Mustang that had them.
