Oh no, those are nice by any standards. And yours looks like a better example than most!

I was born in 1985. I was given (thanks, Steve) a 1988 Japanese Jazz special for helping my friend move out west. I turned it into a fine bass. It was already pretty good. My present bass was a hell of a present, and I worked on it for probably half a year. I defretted it and had a body made by Warmoth. Shall I give y'all pictures?

Well...I turn 50 tomorrow....which makes me a 1970 baby. I tried numerous vintage basses..pre BYB and above. My wife is 1972...ironically that and this fluke 1970 P bass I found, are the nicest ones I played.
I love the BYB idea....but I think it's more personal than what someone would pay for it. So I will keep it for life and maybe it will be worth a bit more in 40years or so....the kids can sell n split the money. I will be 90 and only care about if I crapped myself or if that was yesterday's.
Happy Birthday to you brother and welcome to the Over 50 Club!

My partner and I are both ‘91. We got (and then sold) a early ‘92 telecaster for the novelty. I have no idea what kind of bass would be cool from that year.

Depends on your taste...the new basses I bought that year were

Warwick Thumb 5-string

Fender CS '62 Jazz Bass

Ibanez SR924

There might have been something else at the time, but these are the ones that I remember. All of them are still pretty cool IMO.

As for myself...a birth year Jazz Bass would be nice as would a Guild Starfire. Second tier would be Gibson EB-2 or EB-3 since I'm not too crazy about the pre-67 chunky necks on these...

Realistically, Starfire would be the most likely choice since I already own a matching 6-string...and they usually go for less than a Jazz or an EB.
