Cab combinations that don't make sense?

Take the path of least resistance. Take the advice of experts and put together a rig that is guaranteed to work. ie; with matching drivers. I gambled and it worked out great but...I don't know what I am missing. I have a sweet 1X15 with a 3015LF Eminence Neo which sits beneath a Sweet 2X10 Neo Cab both made by Avatar. It's fantastic but what am I missing?? How much better could it have been to have 2 1X15's or 2 2X10's ?
Meh, cab companies and sales people have to make a living, and often just make what people will buy, whether it's "right" or not.
Ampeg knows bass amplification, right?

It may sound perfectly fine. Mixing is mostly bad for efficiency.
Why do we care about efficiency, myself included in a world where 1000w amps only weight a couple pounds ? I don't know.

To a lot of bass players a 410 over a 115 is still the holy grail.
I had a guy offer to go home and bring me his 410 + 115 because I only had a single "little 12". I thanked him for his very generous offer but said I thought I had it covered. He came up after the first set to see if I was through the PA, nope it's just this single little 12 (plus a 6" mid, with about 325w behind it).
And to *most* users of Mesa cabs that have tested different offerings, those cabs are also the weakest in the Mesa line-up

I finally found one in a store to try, gave it a spin but it really lacked top end.
When I commented on this the salesman looked me straight in the face and said "it's a bass cab, it isn't supposed to have high end."
I smiled and said I am used to cabs with high end, and I then pointed at an Epifani UL2-310 somebody traded in and told him to try that one, it was what I was used to. Plenty of highs. That is not even tossing my fEARful into the mix which can be painfully bright if you don't roll the tweeter down.
I probably said it before but I A/B a good old SVT fridge with my rig, consisting of a Fishman preamp, Berg IP112 and AE112.

I used to play a peavey 3620, 1x15, 2x15, and 2x10. All at the same time. Never had anyone complain about it-- band members, audience members, soundmen, club owners--- nobody. Switched to a single 2x15 for easier schlep. Then I started getting compliments. Circumstantial evidence? Maybe. Still think a few of you must have been butthurt when somebody with real-world experience told you that your way-too-expensive mixed driver rig you looooove so much sounds awful. Like I said (and many others) if you like it, so what? Is the space-time continuum going to rupture if you mix your stuff up? It just isn't a great idea.
That had to be quite a chore schlepping all those cabs around. Glad things have gotten much smaller and lighter over the years.

I had a van. And I was a teenager. It was lifting that was the real PITA. Everything but the 1x15 and 2x10 had casters, but still wouldn't want that kind of rig again. I do miss the 3620, if for no other reason than making eyeballs shake at 50 feet.
No, I personally am not a fan of mixed drivers. But I dont get mad when someone feels they work for them and Ive heard plenty of guys with great tones through 15-210 or 15-410 rigs.
I either gig a 810 or a 212 depending on the size of the stage Im playing on. If the 810 fits, I take it with me to get the drivers closer to my ears. I feel with the big cab I dont need as much stage volume.

Yea, I played through a tube head and 2 x 412 stack for years, loved the sound but not the schlep. That was when we had a band van and were all young and usually had a couple of volunteer roadies to help.
Now I move it myself and need to fit it in my car. My back is ok but my shoulders are shot so heavy lifting is out. With a sack truck I can move my whole rig in one trip.
Well to be fair, I play a 400 watt, 100 pound tube head through a '66. The cab is only 100 pounds, but the output is huge. For me it isnt really the weight, it is the size of the cab. I can manage the whole rig up and down stairs on my own.
