Cab for Walkabout?

Hi all. I am sure it has been asked before, but I couldn't quite find what I am looking for answer wise. I apologize if this is redundant.

I just took delivery of a Scout 12 4 ohm Walkabout combo. Oh my God I am in love. The tone of this thing with the vintage vibe of the cab is just off the chain. I really think this is going to be my number 1. Ultimately I'd like to pair it up with Mesa's extension cabinet, but that seems unlikely with availability of them. With mine already being 4 ohm I am going to have to do more reading before I add an additional 4 ohm to it. All of that being said I may look for a larger than 212 cab to put this with. Maybe a 610 or even a Fridge. What are some really efficient cabs like this, but will not color the natural sound of this head or even maybe a slightly vintage feel? I am going to plug this into my drummer's 1969 Flat Back SVT on Sunday and I just can't wait! I have Avatar cabs (a 212 and a 126) which sound good, but I kind of want to step up into great cabs. Thanks.

What I encourage you to do is to replace that driver with the 8 ohm factory replacement. It's more sensitive (on a power basis) and will allow you to add another cabinet without the limitations of running below 4 ohms. I do not recommend using the WA below 4 ohms, even though originally it appeared to be ok. Too many changes in semiconductors (MOSFETs) that resulted in inconsistent performance outside what the suppliers thought would be acceptable (ultimately).

Here's a link to the correct driver: Speaker - 12" Scout Neodymium 300 - 8 ohm

I was hoping you'd chime in. Thank you.

BTW congrats on the amp. I thought really hard about getting a Walkabout Scout as my next amp but I was worried about adding to it in the future. Ended up going with the Subway line but when I see Scouts for sale I question my decision.

That's weird, the link came directly from the online store page. It's there, I will update the link when I get back to the shop.

Oh, I see that it's no longer avail. Let me follow up to see what the options might be.

You didn’t happen to buy it online from Music-go-round in San Antonio did you? They just sold a 4 ohm walkabout Scout about a week ago. I was going to buy it but it had just sold online.

Replacing the driver with an 8 Ohm cone is a great idea. That said, most 212 or 610 cabs will be 4 Ohms so you still will not be able to (or want to) run them under your Walkabout. Even if you did, you'd risk blowing the combo's 12" cone if you maxed out the other, larger cab. If you get an 8 Ohm 212, your overall impedance will be OK for the head, but the power will not be equally distributed to all the drivers, since 1/2 will go to each box. If you have the scratch, Mesa's Subway 215 cab under the walkabout head will be a bomb. If $$ is tighter, I'd look for a used 4 Ohm 410 or 610 to get some real volume out of the head, and pop the head out of the combo to use with the larger cab. . It's the best sounding head I have ever heard, but 300 watts is still 300 watts, and if you play with a loudish band, a larger cab will be most welcome. Lastly, an outboard High pass filter pedal to run in front of your Walkabout is worth considering. It'll adjustably/optionally tighten your lows and get a little more useable volume out of it, for <$100.

If I don’t plan to run the combo with another cab leaving the 4 in there I will likely do as long as it’s not a problem. Sounds fantastic like it is.

Yes i am thinking a 4 ohm cab to be used with the standalone head. Thanks for the info.

I think you're asking two questions here:
can I run another Walkabout scout cab with this,
and,
I may just pull the head and use this with some other bigger cab.

So.
As agedhorse said, it would be best to swap your walkabout to an 8 ophm driver if you're going to run an extension cab, which should also be 8 ohms.
I sometimes pair my Walkabout with either a subway 115 or Baer ML112.

And the head itself will of course work well with some other large cab such as an 810 or whatever you like.

So the stock Walkabout Scout 12 came with a 4-ohm speaker? The jacks in the back are labelled 8-ohm. I have run the Walkabout with a Subway 15 (8-ohm) and it has been fine for the most part. I did have some crackling and inconsistent volume, but I attributed that to the cable (this was after taking it to Petaluma and having it checked out thoroughly). Am I ok using that combination?

one could order the Walkabout 12 in either 4 or 8 ohm.
it should be labeled appropriately for which way it came out of the factory but if you're unsure you can test it.

4 ohm walkabout with 8 ohm subway is 2.67 ohms, which is below the recommended 4 ohm minimum.

Thank you, Chef. It looks like an 8-ohm. I bought it off the shelf, so I didn't order it. As I said, the output jacks are labelled 8-ohm.
