Cab Impulse Response Megathread

Just wanted to make sure I don't brick my device chasing down sampling rabbit holes (if that's possible)
two points...

I.M.E. IR and chasing down a rabit hole is very nearly the same thing.
It's really easy to get lost and overthink things.

Not sure which IR loader you are using... both of mine TC Impulse Loader and Mooer Radar IR Cab loader are both extremely tolerant to various input file configurations.

I've owned the Mooer Radar in the past, but never had the need to try a down-sample with it. My current device is a ToneX One Bass edition pedal I picked up about a week ago.

This might be of interest to readers of this thread, a thread I made after experimenting with emulating a cab via EQ, a successful experiment, as I am now using that instead of the IR based cab sim I used previously, and even managed to do so with merely 8 bands of parametric EQ, plus a HPF:

But yes, I do realize that IR sims does more than merely EQ, and that there is much more to the tone of a cab than merely static frequency response, but as it happened to be I ended up preferring simple EQ to any of the many IR based cab sims I tried.

In regards to downsampling, I've since discovered that my ToneX One Bass Edition pedal, by design, will automatically down-sample IR's that are at higher sample rates (48k, 96k, etc). The ToneX One plays at 44.1k sample rate, natively.

I tried out some ShiftLine cabinet IR's (sampled at 48k) without issue last night. Glad I don't have to do the manual conversions. This weekend I'll be importing ALL my IR's I've collected in the past from Dr. Bonkers, Redwirez, SeaCow Cabs, etc.

just got this in the mail from Celestion.... Mesa/Boogie - Celestion Digital

the thoughts of a collection of Subway cabs, like the Berbantino collection kicked immideately in triggering massive Pavlov's response...
after mopping up the drooling, I'm now mopping up the tears... just gitaaar cabs, no Subway, not even Powerhouse cabs, not even one single one.

This is just not fair !

:crying: :mad::eek: :sour:

After sleeping a night over this - and now no more being able to edit my post - my disappointment was real, but unreasonable...
Celestion publish IR's of cabs containing Celestion speakers. Bergantino NXT series do, Mesa Boogie Subway and Powerhouse cabs do not.

Still, would love some Subway cab IR's to taste the flavour....

Question to those with deeper Impulse Response (IR) knowledge:

I was so exited to find the free Aguilar Cabinet Suite which promises "features custom IR's of our entire SL and DB cabinet range. Recorded to capture the distinct character of each cabinet, you can upload up to 3 IR's to your Tone Hammer or AG amp and also allows you to load your own impulse responses"

Downloaded and installed. Okay, the software is to upload the IR's to a Tone Hammer or AG head, which I do not have, but it contained a folder of perfectly legit looking wav IR files. I wanted to see how they plot to compare to the extensive collection of Redwirez DB115 IR's

But I cannot make head or tail out of these IR's taken from the Aguilar collection:

Refering again to Aguilar's description, I conclude that there is no further processing happening in the heads, as that would prevent the uploading of own IR's. Plugging them into my TC Impulse loader, they sound exactly as wonky as they look.

What gives? If anybody could explain this to me I'd be very grateful.

All of my extensive collection of IR's look like this.
I am aware that the frequency plots of cab IR's are hugely dependent on mic type and placement.
Frequency plot from the Redwirez collection, resp. Celestion:

No idea.

But if it's worth anything, I've been playing with the Aguilar bass suite just for practice and there is just not a single way of making the included IR's sound good. Other than using other IR's or cranking the DI knob in the software.

Virtually all amps (SL and DB) sound like they just wanted you to hear MIDS MIDS MIDS and muffled the high end.

That still doesn't check out with your results from the sweep, though. If anything, that shows extended high frequency response which the software does NOT have.

Well that didn't last long...

I am back at using the stock Ampeg SVT-212AV IR cab sim.

It simply sound both fuller and more open.

I still stand by my recommendation of Doctor Bonkers IR's though.

Just for some reason I can find nothing, other of the stock cab sims, Doctor Bonkers. Shiftline, or otherwise, that beat that stock Ampeg cab sim for me.

Doctor Bonker's 1 x 15" Trace Elliot cab sims sounds great as well though, just not quite right for me.

Im shuffling tonight on my SGT thought you might like to know...

Bonker's Aguilar 115 is nice, go with Cone mic on that one, single mic sounds- i liked the 421 and Nueman 89 and M160 to match the ampeg sounds it seems more edge micing is the way to go. But that cone mic tone on that aguilar is something.

However, to be more copasetic I decided to use the new SVT-15E_Ribbon_4038 So the two have the same thickness, output level and microphone capture, but their mids sound different. The 15E hits better with the SVT than the B15. Nice to have the flavors.

DR Bonkers SWR Goliath III 410 however for my 410 choice. Bottom Left mic position, Edge mic, M160 microphone. 500ms sample length. PERFECT. That sounds like a hi-fi version of the Ampeg 410HLF, which is warmer and thicker in the low mids. Think going between Marcus and Duck Dunn at the flick of the side switch.

810, i filled that slot with the Chop Tones Marco 210. With their "ribbon" mic. From the Bass Essentials vol1 Cabinet IR. Went back and forth with the Mesa210 Ribbon cabinet, and i like the smoother fatter sounds of the marco over the grindier sounds of the mesa, but they were both killer.

I like to use 80hz high pass. Why? this puts 40hz -12db, around where it is on most cabinets. Need more, that EQ point is 40hz.. so.. it just sits well. Less
bleed over with the low knob, more control to my ears. Micing a cabinet can get out of hand quickly, this sounds more like what I hear from my listening position 2-3 ft away, and thats what I want the audience to hear because its what im cramming down my own head when I make that music for them.

I had to do that. I registered, nothing happened. Opened a support ticket and they emailed me when they had processed the "license"
Finally got them in my account today. All 3 sound great, but SVT_15E_Ribbon_4038 and SVT_610HLF_Dynamic_112 are superb. I feel all 3 are better than the factory ones you cannot change. Thanks for mentioning here that these are available.

Anyone have a resource for any IRs of Mesa 4x10 cabinets? Subway or Powerhouse. I downloaded a Mesa pack from Audio Assault (seacow cabs), but they are so quiet and thin sounding; even when cranking the volume.

I had a bit of a breakthrough with my NUX mini studio last night. Ive been only lukewarm with mine because it was so not user fiendly to update the firmware and the IRs were only OK....
Also I could only upload 44.1Khz 24B IR files (and they still didnt seem right so I kept reseting to default).

So last night I finally got around to hacking away at it again, I managed to get the thing to actually work as expected.
The firmware update instructions are correct (but you have to follow them exactly) but there are no instructions on the Editor. The key (if you guys havent already figured it out also) is to:
  1. Disconnect everything after firmware update.
  2. Start the editor on your computer.
  3. Power up the pedal engage it (click it on)
  4. Only then connect the USB cable between the pedal and computer.
  5. It might take two tries.
  6. You shoul get an error (ignore it, click it off)
  7. Go to the settings button on the editor (sprocket, top right)
  8. On the MIDI tab, NUX mini studio needs to appear in both input and output boxes.

Presto, everything works:
I can load any IR and they respond beautifully.
The IR Level button on the Editor now works (and is needed).
My favorites so far are the various DR Bonkers HypeReal Cab Mixes (at 96KHz_32B..!)
I really like the Shiftline SVT-810E as well.

So what I decided to do is keep all the stock the NUX IR in the BASS bank (and brought them to life by adjusting the IR level), then filled the entire ACOUSTIC bank with 810 IRs. The 96K32bit IRs are very very good (but need to be attenuated with the IR level control).

Using Fdeck/SV Pre/mini studio the results are really satisfying, my ampless rig can now be a fridge! Much happier am I.

Screen shots of two (notice the different IR level positions).
