A box would resonate if not sturdily built. So do speaker cabs.I'd be afraid that a box with solid sides would resonate with some frequencies, whereas an open crate wouldn't. Am I wrong?

The main difference with a box is that with a solid surface between the cab and floor there's less loss of acoustical coupling between the cab and floor. But that's not necessarily an advantage, you want to lose some coupling in a boomy room.
