Cab placement issue on gig

Yeah, I've considered those options as well. The only problem I have with elevating the cab is that I heard someone say that at some point you begin to get cancellation of some frequencies---at a certain height. Anyone wanna explain that?

You're ok until you get over 2ft. or so off the floor. 2.8 ft. = a 100hz cancellation. Higher will cancel lower in frequency.

I had the legs shortened so I could get a 16" and a 18" height, as I found that the 24" minimum height got a little too wobbly with 212 vertical loaded cabs. Folds up into a small T shape. Other times I use the old milk crate as pictured, only I found one that is a few inches longer, so I can actually reach into it if needed.

There is nothing magic about floor reflections. All of the room's surfaces are potential sources of reflected sound disruptive to the accurate perception of the direct path*. This is why RFZ/LEDE [reflection free zone / live end dead end] designs for critical listening suites came into being - oddly enough these designs focus on the front/side walls and ceiling typically ignoring the floor altogether. For some odd reason TB likes to focus on the floor and ignore the walls and ceiling. Go figger... :rolleyes:

If you try cab propping the big difference you'll find as a bass player is the loss of low frequency propagation efficiency that comes from being acoustically coupled to the floor - you'll be losing the bass boost you get from coupling a low frequency source to a nearby surface [put a sub on a pole and the sound propagates spherically - like a soap bubble, put it in a trihedral corner - like where two walls and the floor come together and the same energy propagates in a much smaller volume of 1/8th of the sphere = perception of louder low frequency sound.

Of course this concession may be good for a given room, and/or give rise to other changes considered beneficial. For example the highly directional elements of the speaker hit the player in the ear louder when you raise/tilt these speaker elements so they are better aimed at him - but keep in mind, this benefit for the bass player may diminish the quality of sound for the audience if the bass cab is doing more than serving as a monitor for the player. Also obviously when you move the cab closer to the player's ear you gain loudness.

*There are always phase reinforcement/cancellation anomalies for any signal source [cab] position for any listening position in any room that includes boundaries which reflect sound [all practical rooms]. These arise from path length differences between the direct path from the source to the listener and the path followed by sound reflected off a boundary [ceiling/wall/floor/large flat object] - which causes the reflected sound and the direct sound to arrive at the listener at different times = out of phase to one another.

The difference in physical path length for direct sound and the reflection can be viewed as a difference in time of arrival of the two sources at the listener - as the addition of two waves of different phase. This phase differential can be constructive or destructive at any given frequency - the extent of the time difference and strength of the reflection determines the listeners perception of the signal and the nature of the cancellation/reinforcement. For example, when the physical distance dimension of the path length difference is equal to half of the wavelength of a given frequency, that frequency suffers cancellation [this never completely occurs for several reasons which generally collapse to the fact that there is never perfectly equal amplitude and alignment of position/superposition of the two waves in the real world].

Calculating this difference for the floor reflection while ignoring the reflections from the other room boundaries is meaningless. The perceived sound is a result of ALL the perceived signal sources [the direct path and ALL the reflected paths of sufficient strength to make a perceived difference].
 
There was a great thread on here a while back about this. The guy built a wooden box with the same depth and widh of his cabinets. He used it to carry all of his accessories and then turned it upside down and sat his cab on it. Basically, the same idea as the milk crate, but classier.

That's Foz, who posted several posts above you...its the green 10" cabs/box setup. I think it gets a bit less love now with his fEARful setup.

thought I'd give this a small bump. thanks for posting this suggestion MysticMichael !

I got mine in yesterday, I used it for the first time tonight and its amazing how much more definition I can hear from my cab (1 x 15). I'm still a bit scared that the head could slide off but I think I'll look for longer screws to use for the heads rubber feet and add some washers. then I could "hook" the feet over the front edge of the cab.

or just use som bunjie straps :p

I'd be afraid that a box with solid sides would resonate with some frequencies, whereas an open crate wouldn't. Am I wrong?
