Cab plans.. feedback?

Hey guys (first post here)!

here's the plan. after reading up (and considering my budget!) i won a peavey mark VIII XP head for £83 (about $170)?

now, i've heard and read plenty of things about how peaveys tend to sound. i also acknowledge i'm trying to polish a turd in the eyes of some of the real connoisseurs here - but i plan to get a real bang-for-the-buck setup going!

basically, i would buy either a gutted 2x10 cab or a cheap, heavy one and just strip the speakers. i'd replace them with celestion green labels (200w connected in parallel to match the 350w/8ohm output) - hopefully a nice pair of speakers and a half-decent preamp will produce a nice enough tone. i play a G+L L2000 tribute.

would this be something you guys would consider doing? i'm basically looking for a portable (car-bootable) head/cab setup for larger pubs and medium venues.. would any particular brand of cab be particularly suitable for this?

Peavey heads are great value - probably the best value heads going around on the 2nd hand market IMO.

As for the can idea - could work......but buying another peavey 2nd handy could be just as cheap, like getting a 15" bin (black widow speaker). Just a thought.

i havn't really considered getting a peavey cab to go with it - i'll have a look! i'm probably being too hard on the amp before it even arrives - but i've heard amazing results from speaker swaps before..

my dream cab setup right now is a 2x10 atop a 2x12.. nice and tight, whilst still retaining punch and clarity.. i've got to try a decent 1x15 cab somewhere, i've been put off them by crappy rehearsal room gear

If you need a single 8 ohm bass cab for gigs that's small, lightweight and portable, can handle 350 watts and is still cheap, then your best bet may be a 1x15". There are many 15" speakers cheaply available which will handle more power and go deeper and very likely louder than a pair of 10" Celestions. A single 15" also takes up less space and usually weighs less than two 10" ers.

I've used the Peavey MarkVIII head in the past and was impressed with it. It's a lot of amp for relatively little money and I think Peavey has an undeserved poor reputation (at least as far as their bass amps are concerned).

I have two 1x15" cabinets that I use which are both small and light yet can get fairly loud while handling the amount of power coming out of your Peavey amp.

-- ElectroVoice 15L speaker (in a TL606 cab)
-- Peavey Scorpion 15 (in 3.5 liter homemade cab)

Both of these speakers can easily be had by most musicians on a budget.

If you're looking for bass for the buck, either buy or build a copy of an old Peavey 215 deep cab.

Celestion green backs are guitar speakers and are totally unsuited for bass. May I suggest you look at Eminence speakers for a more suitable line.

I'd take the new Celestion bass drivers more seriously if they provided any plots or T/S parameters. As they don't I wouldn't waste my time with them. Load the Omni with DeltaLite II 2510 and you have an awesome cab for very little money.

I thought there might be something different about "Green Label" but it was early and I was too lazy to check. I just threw that out there in case a mistake was about to happen for you.
