CAB SET UPS

Hello,i'd like views on using either Two 4x 10 cabs or a single 15 with one 4x10 cab, (with a 5 string bass )
Im Thinking about starting playing Blues/ Funk kind of stuff ,i have at the moment a son of Bertha 1x15 cab and was thinking about a Golliath 3: 4x10 (but getting hold of one in UK Is another storey),I Have a Peavey automix MK111 Bass head which has the facility to use a slave to another cab and adjust the frequencies by the in built crossover knob.
Regards Len

I love some 115 cabs and I love some cabs with 10"s. I have never once liked them together. You get volume imbalance issues, you get potential phasing problems that cause some notes to be cancelled out, and while matched cabs always sound great together, unmatched cabs are unpredictable in their behavior together and are more likely not to sound as good as matched cabs.

Yeah OP, you might want to try feeding the following search to google:
4x10 with 1x15 site:talkbass.com

Adding site:talkbass.com to your google search will limit said search to talkbass.com and this subject has been flogged to death. I suggest using google in this fashion because google generally stomps the internal search included with discussion forum hosting software, and TB's is no different.

What do you hope to get from stacking a 1x15 underneath a 4x10 as opposed to two 4x10s or two 1x15s?

Now that we have the elephant out of the room we can get to more personal questions:
What is your budget and what are your tone goals? Also, how big are the gigs you play?

Well starting with the "ZERO RESEARCH" reply ,i was asking for views on this subject, and do have some experience, of a simular set up i used in the 90's,I used to BI-AMP the Peavey Automix with a bottom 1x18" and slave it via the o/p jacks on the front of the amp using patch leads to a 2x10" Cab this gives you independent volume of each cab and also crosses it over to the desired frequency.
Not the speaker horn type Bi amping systems used on some amps,(although be glad to hear from anyone that does this like the GK amps and cabs with the horns)

I was thinking on the lines of definition with the 4x10", and the bottom 1x15" Handling the Lows
hence not using two of the same cabs,(never had a 4x10")
As for gigs i'm not in a band but wanting to get back playing, and don't have any experience on how a single 4x10" may or may not handle 5 stringers,
Tone goals are enough to bring slap out and legato fretless.
Thanks for the replies guys.
PS, Done s bit of research, on you tube, and some monster players are using the 4x10" 1x15" combination.

You bet there are, and when they ask me, I'll tell them my opinion and qualify it with, "But YOU sound great!" But they weren't asking the question...you were ;)

Anyway, some mixed rigs CAN sound really good, and some companies work to make cabs that will sound better than most when they're mixed, but it's 50/50 at best and you won't really know if it'll work for you until you try it, whereas matched cabs are a sure thing.

IME it doesn't really work like that but as long as you are aware that the 115 will (probably) have a much lower power limit than the 410, why not? Stack them up and play the thing. Personally, I wouldn't buy anything to get this setup because IMO there are better ways to get both bottom, definition, and power handling in one cabinet, but if I owned the cabs sure, I'd probably try it out.

Only endorsers I see using the 4x10/115 setup are the hartke guys. Most of them are using an LH1000 which can control how much output is getting sent to each cab. Because you can bet that 15 will fart out on lows way faster than any 4x10 would, speaker size =/= more or less low end.

My line of thought was since i have the SWR 1X15", I saw on Ebay a Golliath 4x10" so was thinking it would be more of a full range system when used with the 1x15", so yes i have heard that you can get a better bass response with the 10's but what about handling the bottom end of a five string as in damage to the drivers.
PS. the cab on ebay is overpriced and two far for me to justify going to collect it.

The 15" is FAR more likely to be damaged by a low B than the 4x10.

When I was choosing between the Hydrive 115 and the Hydrive 410, the 410 lost control before the 115.

Tone wise, they were very similar.

I went with the 115. I match it with the Hartke 2.5XL (occasionally with the XL 210).

Sounds great. But Hartke seems to tune their cabinets to compliment their various driver configurations.

I play a low B continually.

Yes,i think it is probably right about using a 4x10" and a 1x15",as i mentioned earlier when i used to use a 1x18" and a 2x10" i did Bi amp with a slave linked to the Peavey amp ;it does state in the manual if the slave you use has a greater power than the Peavey head, then to use that to power the larger bass driver(s)

...and I must admit my Son of Bertha cab sounds great and i wouldn't mind another of the same.

I had an SOB and a goliath II. The SOB was not as loud as the goliath II. We are talking ~350 watts for the SOB 115 and ~500 watts for the gII 410.

However, two SOBs is a nice rig. Two of them ought to equal or come close to a Big Bertha, which is rated for 700 watts @ 4 ohms. The SOB is a little bigger in volume than 1/2 of a BB, so you may actually get more lows out of the paired SOBs, plus you will have two horns. It is a nice rig with redundancy. If one breaks, you can still make music.

Adding a second SOB is probably the best low cost upgrade. Finding one in good condition might take patience, though. Good Luck!
