Cab started smelling after cranking up??

Hi everybody,

I was practicing with my band, and at the end of practice I turned off the limiter for a little extra boost and shortly after, a weird, burnt-plastic type of smell started coming up from the cab. Anyone know what could cause it?

It's an old Peavey 2x15 cab with an Eminence Delta speaker on top and something else on bottom that I can't remember. The bottom speaker is almost brand new; I replaced it about seven months ago. When I smelled the top speaker, the scent was stronger up there, but it's hard to tell. I took the top speaker out and looked and it, but I couldn't see anything wrong ... that said, I don't really know what I'm looking for. My amp is an Ampeg B2RE, if that's relevant.

Any ideas would help!!

Hi.

A cooked voice coil in either of the speakers is a strong suspect.

Do the "scratch" test, and if the speakers are still relatively ok, take some time with WinISD for example and tune the cab to the speakers in order to make the cab more efficient so You don't have to crank up quite so high.

In any case, a more sensitive cab or more speakers sounds like what You're after.
