Cab types/array

I'll be in the market for a good Amp/cab soon. Would a 4x10 suit me better than two 2x10's? I really only play for myself right now but if my stars are right I will play for more people than that :D. I'm currently leaning towards a 4x10 with the option of getting another to stack them vertically for some good dispersion. I like Ampeg, but am open to any and all suggestions.

Ampeg's a good call ;) Their 210's are medium duty, but they're very light and sound great. I use them all the time. A 410 can sound nice, too, and Ampeg's 410's will take a lot more power and get way loud enough to get you fired. I don't know...both ideas have merit.

I like to hear people bitch about the weight of my 410 when they help (get conscripted) to move it with me. Im fairly certain that Trace Elliot used a fair amount of lead, cast iron and added concrete in the manufacturing process. It sounds great and I can use it as a semi portable bombshelter. My 210 is much lighter and sounds great.

Per the thread title, a 410 by definition is no sort of "array", and you don't have ears on the back of your knees, so there's your answer.

If you like Ampegs, get you some Ampegs.

Assuming they really are the best you've heard and not just the best out of the few things you've actually heard .

These stupid ******* smiley's have no meaning to me. They all look like ******* cartoons. That was supposed to mean something like "???". Or maybe a skeptical raised eyebrow.

Stupid facebook twitting generation.....

:D

What's your realistic budget?

I'm not a fan, but a 410, if you don't mind its cubeish shape & its (probably) heavy weight, will get you to loud for the least bucks. And a 2 x 410 will get you to very loud.

I'd prefer a 2 x 210 or 2 x 212 (actually a 2 x 15/6 :D). It can still be plenty loud (& a 2 x 15/6, well fuggetaboutit ).

It's all about what you like. You're new to TalkBass (welcome!), but are you new (or pretty new) to bass? If you like Ampeg, get Ampeg. But if you're new to bass & want Ampeg because it's pretty much all you've heard about, you should do a good bit of research here. There are lots of other cabs around. I sure wouldn't limit myself to only Ampeg, by a long shot.

I've played bass for about 17 years, off and on. From ages 7-24. I've learned a lot from this site in regards to products available to me though, and all of the amps I've tried out (Hartke, GK, Markbass, etc...) don't sound as good as an Ampeg to me. Of course I was trying out combos, and 1x15 ones at that. My current Ampeg BA115 gets the job done, but this is me trying to do research for the eventual purchase of a big boy amp. :D

"Good" is subjective. What is your budget, how loud do you need to be, what kind of music do you play, what amp are you using, and do you have any size or weight restrictions?

Notice not even top array manufacturers have a problem with having a pair of woofers arranged horizontally per unit or are we all doing this wrong! after all there is some snugglemuffin with a pair of vertical 2x10" cabs somewhere far over there that's dispersing sound waves without the latencies of either a digital console compounded by a digital system controller, and all we usually have to sort that out, is to take a feed from it either in polarity or 180 opposite on the console.

Best way to avoid being off axis on stage is to have a complete wall of speakers behind you, that way there are ones on axis where you stand.
Everything else is off axis unless you do the whole gig DI'd with in ears into a central point source system like this.

Sorry no acoustic instruments are possible due to being off axis.:)

You do realise that they are going to combine facebook, twitter, and youtube into one site to conveniently keep all the time wasters together. it will be called you-twit-face

That's it. Bringing my J-arrays and centerfills down to the pub then. :)

I like to play Death Metal Dance Punk type stuff. So I like to get heavy, deep, and crazy at times. Think Dead From Above 1979 on more cocaine and acid than normal.
