Cable making clicking sound?

Yesterday I was playing my guitar and it made a nasty sound like a cable going bad and then started making a weird clicking sound.
I messed with the cable a bit and got it to stop but if I turned wrong it would make the same clicking noise (about 300 ms delay between the clicks). Im not sure if it is the cable or my guitar.
anybody have that happen to you?

I did all the proper testing. direct from guitar to amp, no fx, loop off ect ect. Tried two different cables, with one it did the same thing but worse, the other seemed to fix it but the problem was intermittent enough that I could have just missed it.

There is a good chance that Both cables were bad. Im all of a sudden having a lot of trouble with cables going bad.

The likelihood two cables are busted is pretty slim, but possible. Your issue probably lies on the guitar side.

One of them was not mine and is used by a middle school, a high school and a church. It appeared to have a poor connection on one of the lugs.
The other cable is one I've been using for about 1/2 year. It was a Live Wire Elite and it doesn't have a standard plug, the shield wire was soldered to a little tab that appeared to be press-fit to the plug. It was very easy to pull out from the slot it was in. I may replace this plug with a standard 1/4 inch pancake plug.

I was siting down close to my amp and had a phone in my pocket for what that's worth. I usually stand and am farther away from my amp. Ive heard that phones can cause strange sounds.

If the clicking was rhythmically paced, then it wasn't the fault of your guitar.

Sounds like a classic case of interference from a GSM phone. Try a fresh, quality cable under the same circumstances, and if that doesn't fix the problem, consider improving the shielding on your instrument.

...or don't play sitting down with your 'phone in your pocket!
