does it really make much difference what cables I have connecting my pedals together in terms of their quality?
It depends. If you have lots of pedals and most of them are non buffered pedals, the quality of cables is important. If you use only few pedals or use lot of buffered pedals, the quality of cables is not as important anymore.
If you use passive bass, the cable between your bass and your first pedal in your chain or your amp is VERY important. Lot of people don't believe this, but I do and I can tell the different between good & bad cable easily. Bad cable (= hi capacitance) sucks hi freq, it makes your sound dull.
If you know how to solder, buy the plugs & Canare GS cables from www.redco.com and you'll save $$$. Canare is not the best, but way better than those cheapo cables (even some says that it is still better than Monster cable). My personal favorites are Klotz & Sommer, but they're very expensive in US (but only around 1.5 / mtr in Europe).
