Cabs suggestions for my Hartke LH500?

I've been using my LH500 with the Hydrive 1x15 cab for about a year. It seems to be enough power 3/4 of my gigs. Those other few times are due to idiotic stage volumes, outdoor shows or an outdoor show with idiotic stage volume.

So currently I'm sending 350 watts into the 1x15 @ 8ohms. I could get a 4x10 and run the head at 4ohms w/ both cabs or a friend offered me his SVT 8x10e. (I think it can run at 4ohms?)

What would be louder? A 8x10 or a 4x10 and a 1x15? Price is about the same.

True. Moving around wouldn't be such a pain. I'm just wondering if there'd be more volume coming from an 8x10 80" of speaker action vs. 55". Maybe I'm just crazy.

The HyDrive HX410 is louder than the HX115. It will handle 1000 watts while the 115 will handle 500 watts. Most of the metal guys are buying dual HX410's, and some of the guys like Victor Wooten and Jack Bruce are playing one HX410 and one HX115 like your's.

I owned an SVT with two 8x10's in the 70's. At around 150lbs each, it is WAY more than I wanted to handle then, and certainly now. The HyDrive HX410 weighs around 65 lbs.

I do know that, given the same ohms, a 410 is 3db louder than a 210. It would make sense that two 410's at 8 ohms each, run in parallel, would equal the volume of 1 8x10 at 4 ohms.

I got on this thread to see if anyone had compared the two Hydrive 410's vs one HX410 and one HX115, like yours. So go buy the HX410 to go with your HX115, and tell me how you like it. (Ha. Jus' kiddin') I like 10's, and I'm 99% sure I'm going with two of them, but would love to talk to someone who had tried both combinations side-by-side.

P/S: I use a Hartke LH1000 head. I have a 410XL with road case that I'm going to sell before getting the HyDrive cabs.

You mean in tone? Typically yes, if you are comparing like one 4 ohm 410 vs two 8 ohm 210's of the same brand, speakers, etc. But, a lot of 410's have two chambers in them, so they are so close to two 210's, it's almost impossible to hear. In volume, only a minute difference (3db). Advantage is being able to carry one 210 to practice or small venues, if you go with two 210's. Disadvantage is the two 210's will cost more than one 410.

All of that is with the assumption of an apples to apples comparison, brand-wise, speakers, etc.

If I could not hear a significant improvement in tone, I will go with two 410 HyDrives. And I mean night and day difference with one 115 and one 410 vs two 410's.

I went through all the single large speaker cabs a long time ago. Folded horn 18's (Acoustic). Projection horn 15's (Sunn) and so on..... JBL's, Cerwin-Vega's, Altec's. You name it. When I got my SVT, I could not believe 10's could produce that much bottom end. Three decades later, I'm still playing 10's (Hartke's and Avatar's).

(I have a Hartke 410XL and a 210 XL for sale in classifieds, fyi. Road case, also, with 410.)

Well to make matters worse and not answer any of your questions, I stopped by Sam Ash in NYC and played a bunch of stuff.

Hydrive Cabs
The 4x10 and the 1x15 felt the most "full" to me like if I wanted to break all the windows in the building, that'd be my setup.

The 8x10 was very focused but left me wanting a little bit more low end. Sure it could be dialed in, but it just wasn't there up front. But if I were playing modern rock/metal I think I'd cut through nicely.

I didn't get to try two 4x10s on top of each other, but I have no shame in asking to hear these things and will check it out the next time that amount of "cabbage" is available to me.

FYI my dreams of owning an Ampeg SVT 8x10 I believe are shattered. Too bulky and not even low end to back it up.

I finally made my mind up, and ordered the two HX410 HyDrives yesterday. I try other things, but I always go back to 10's. I have zero problem getting all the bottom end out of them I need, and I just like the responsiveness of multiple smaller speakers compared to a single larger speaker. My EQ settings will change from cab to cab (& room to room), even if the speaker configurations are the same, so that's not an issue for me. Every cab/speaker sounds different. Everyone's ears are different, but I actually think a 410 can sound deeper than a 115. Too often folks equate larger speakers to deeper sound. Sometimes they are, and sometimes they're not.

I'm just excited to be getting HyDrives. Been drooling for them ever since I got my LH1000.

Everyone's already said it so I'm just here to drive it home. If you are any kind of fan of Hartke you owe it to yourself to at least try a HX410. You will not be disappointed. Unless the 810 provides an immediately apparent benefit 2 410s would be a great option simply because you'd probably only need one for most gigs.

I play my LH500 through a single 8 Ohm Peavey Pro 410. This combination has a ton of volume and excellent articulation - I am very satisfied. These cabinets haven't been made in a few years, but they are top notch cabs that you can sometimes find at bargain prices - especially when you are dealing with people don't really know what they are. I paid $180 for mine - and this is for a cab that stores were selling for $800 5 or 6 years ago.

My practice space rig is an LH500 with an Acoustic 810(GC special). It gets super loud, and sounds pretty good. For the price of the cab ($500 out the door) I can't complain.

Until recently I was running a SVT 810, with my LH1000 and it sounded pretty sweet and could get mad volume. I just got tired of hauling the beast around

I got my pair of HX410's yesterday. I'm in love. Just been playing in my studio, and it's pretty dead, but I don't even have to use the tweeters. It isn't lacking anywhere... Bottom, mid, or treble. And with that LH1000 in bridged mode, it might just wake Elvis up. :eyebrow:

I've played a lot of rigs in my life, but nothing will touch this, imho. Some have been powerful, and some have been versatile, but this rig is both. Deep and punchy.

I'll quit salivating on ya'll now. :bassist:

Glad to hear you're digging your rig...but can you give it a rest, I'm trying to get some sleep and you rattling the Earth isn't helping hahah

I have no use for tweeters either, but hey they're there, maybe somewhere they'll come in handy?
