MELF resistors are SMD, so your speculation is correct. I am assuming that they used metal film MELF resistors instead of carbon MELF's for better noise spec's. But, a lot of people believe that there is sonic mojo in carbon resistors, so I may be wrong on the type used. Also, by running the circuits hotter (more current) there will be less noise. So this little guy may actually be quieter than its bigger brother.
