Calibrating feedback for a lackluster seller

If the packing was just the box in your pictures, it's terrible. The ding in the body doesn't seem like a big deal. The thing is, if something's described as near mint, all I'm expecting are some light scratches or something. Still, you opted to keep it and accept the guy's refund, so I guess it's not THAT bad.

I'd give him a 3 but write a detailed review about it, pointing out the utterly crappy packaging and the, ultimately misleading description. Gunk is something that isn't really "damage" but it does indicate a lack of interest in at least presenting the product decently.

By the way, how much was the refund? I don't need to know the exact amount of money, just a percentage or something. Because that's a big factor in all of this, isn't it?

I agree that the packing job was ridiculously bad, and you have other valid complaints. But the seller gave you a partial refund to compensate you for all that. The way I see it, when you accepted the partial refund, you agreed that you had been adequately compensated. Therefore, you should not now give him bad feedback for the mistakes he's already paid for.

Think about it this way: what if his description had said "I'm a thoughtless jerk, therefore I will ship this bass to the buyer barely protected in a crappy box. I also don't give a rat's ass about careful and honest description, so expect a few dings that I failed to describe. In return for putting up with all this, you can have this bass at a very low price. If you're ok with that, go ahead and buy it, but don't complain later."

That's essentially what happened. He gave you a discount in exchange for you agreeing to put up with his negligent behavior and crappy attitude. You accepted the deal.

Being offered a discount when called out on negligence and/or inaccurate description doesn't equate to a good overall rating. It gets a 1 star bump at most for begrudgingly making the attempt to do right by the buyer. I'd say this is a 2 star rating at best with a plus 1 bump to 3 if you feel he did right by you with the discount. Be sure to accurately describe the transaction in its entirety when you leave the rating/review.

You are lucky your bass arrived in as good as condition as it did with that packing. The fact that he gave you a partial refund does not give him points. He had own up to his misrepresenting the condition and absurd packing job or face the wrath of Reverb. Give him a 3 and save others from dealing with this person.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I were thinking about buying from someone who had one or more 3-star ratings I would damn sure read the written description explaining why, so I know if the "problem" was something that would really bother me or not. If the description explained the ridiculously poor packaging (but also the partial refund), I would know not to buy from this person.

If he gave a partial refund and you’re otherwise happy with the bass I’d skip feedback.

You can be pretty assured that you’ll receive negative retaliatory feedback if he hasn’t rated you already. Given that, I generally just walk away from these clowns .

Of course if he gives you negative feedback give him a 1.

2 is the number. I would describe this seller doing literally the least he could possibly do. More important, his neglect in packing caused you to not receive the instrument as sold. That is a BIG disappointment. Reverb takes their vendor relationships seriously and if that guy doesn't up his game, he should get off it. I would be mortified if I received a bass like that [clutching pearls]. Also, you asked for a partial or full refund to send the thing back I'm guessing. Did he refuse to do that? Because I believe that may be against Reverb policy. Come to think of it, i think reverb allows sellers to have ther own policy, but in disagreeing to a full refund he may have been in breach of his own policy, AND griping about it. I would give him a 2. If he cared about his rating, that would not have happened. Also, I would still go with a reverb return. Also, as other poster said above at this point I would care more about warning other buyers than about him.

Thing is that I wonder if negative retaliatory feedback on reverb really matters for someone who is largely a buyer.

If you were happy with the partial refund, he did make it right so it would be 5 stars. If you weren't, you should have settled on what would have. Bad attitude aside, you did agree to the compensation. I'd suggest 5 since they made you whole or none at all and just leave it alone.

I'm not going to post all the photos because there's really no point, but here are a couple choice selections for you.

This is how it was packed. I opened the box and it was like this. Yes, that's a roll of bubble wrap just thrown in there. It's almost a bad joke...yeah, I could've used this bubble wrap on the bass but instead I'll just toss it in here for spite. And yes, that's some sort of adhesive label sticking the bubble wrap to the neck. The bass isn't secured to anything inside the box...it's just bouncing around in there. And to be clear, I didn't unwrap the bass at all before taking this photo. I just opened the box.

My phone didn't do a great job of capturing this dent, but believe me in person it's worse than it looks here.

To be honest it's a miracle the thing survived two weeks in the hands of USPS having been packed so poorly.
I just wrote a long reply recommending 2. Now I'm going 1 And full refund. 3 things really got me going: the s@#$ty pack job, cheapest freight, and believe it or not the gunk under the bridge. I have sold a few instruments, not on a site that would rate, but just on cl. I would always clean them meticulously in excitement for the next player. I can't believe he was thoughtless enough to not bother cleaning the thing before packing it. It only takes a couple minutes. You could look at this way, 1 star off for every thing he did wrong. Poor packing -2, cheap shipping -1, dirty instrument (not near mint) -1, damaged upon receipt -1, grumpy and making his failure your fault -1. I know i said -2 for poor packing but that really is a BIG deal. That takes him to negative 1. Welp, looks like 1 is the best we could do.
