Calling all Shiner/ Paul Malinowski fans!

Very enjoyable. It’s interesting how most of his pedals are 1-song deals, and that he never used the bridge pickup in the Elite.
Right? Or the active preamp on the Elite for that matter.
Makes me want to snag one of the pickups he dropped into the standard P though!
End of the day, majority of his sound is tuning, hot pickup, Maxon 808, Boss EQ with a little cut around 500hz was it? High gain tube channel on the amp being thrashed into break up from everything before hand.
Finding out about the CGCC tuning was the big “Ah hah!” moment for me, when mentioned earlier on this thread.
I thought he said the preamp in the bass was "always on"?
The parts of his approach I've taken aboard over the years are: alternate tunings, hot precision pickup (I am partial to G&L MFDs), tube-screamer like overdrive (Xotic BB), dirty amp. I also gain-stage my distortions. Alas, I've never scored a bargain on an instrument like he and Allen have.

Lollar Precision 90 pickup is great for slamming an amp in my experience.
Not surprised he doesn't use the bridge pickup on that bass. They sound super brittle and wouldn't stand a chance in Shiner's mix.

Anyone have any tips on his Season to Risk tone? I believe it's the same Precision Elite II and Mesa set-up. Just sounds for Jesus Lizard-ish than the Shiner tone

I've got a P-Bass with EMG Geezers and I'm currently running a Darkglass Alpha Omega Ultra with a Shiftline Mesa 2x15 cab sim.

I saw them a bunch during this period. It is the same Elite, I know at one point early on he had a rackmount preamp of some kind. I want to say it was a Peavey Max Bass. But it could have been the Mesa 400+ head into a roadready 2x15 by then. Or the Max Bass came after....ugh. Wish I could remember better. I know he had an Ibanez TS9 that was the "always on" for S2R also, which is why I have one. Probably had the EQ as well at the time. For the S2R stuff that was about all he had on his board from what I recall. Didn't start using the phaser, tremelo and others until Shiner.
Awesome. Thanks for the info! I started playing around with TS based drives (bass drive, Bad Monkey, Green Rhino) and I'm close enough!

I don’t think pM uses special gauges for CGCC. I think it’s all one gauge. The very floppy downtuned G is great for the chorus effect.
This. Take a set of 50-110 and make it happen. The first string being in less tension is actually a big part of that drone/chorussy thing, I think.
I have my main two basses tuned that way (an L2000 and a Fender P), and, in fact, I'm writing all my lines with that tuning as it really has inspired me so much. It' an amazing tuning and so much fun to play with.
. Paul has some Darkglass flavor there now.I bought a GEB-7 from a TB'r, dug out the TS9 and Whammy, tuned up one of my P-basses to CGCC. This into a 200 watt tube amp and 1x15 is soooo good. I have a Phase 90 on another board already that I don't use much, might have to pull it off.
Guess who moved into our practice space. Hope he doesn't mind I post these.
