So...what’s on top of the Peavey, and what are the two cabs?

Another Peavy. Cabs are Ranger 2x15s I believe. I think they're made by a local artisan to Paul.

I remember seeing them once and he used the Maxon OD808 all the time. Low drive, cranked volume. It was ball rattling to say the least. Metal zone was used for feedback and that one super rad part in Lula. Tremolo was used on the beginning of Giant's Chair. Phaser was seemingly kicked on and off as he felt it.

Rangers looks like lovely wood work but I bet it would acquire a lot of "patina" on tour.

If there is ever a good endorsement for the use of 15's in rock, it's PM. His live tone is truly earth-shattering. All the lows and no lack of articulation. He is truly a sonic force.

Is that another Peavey on top of the 400 Classic?

It kinda looks like a 1u rack preamp in an oversized rack case with a bunch of open space, instead of an amp, but I could be wrong.

I just did some quick searching, and didn't find any Peavey Bass Amps or Preamps that have similar knob config, those old school chicken head knobs, and face plate from what I can make out.

I wouldn't rule out it being a guitar head either. Could attribute to the grind ov the sick ass tone.

You guys got me so excited about DADD tuning that I promptly turned up my G string and popped a nearly new Fender 9050L flat. I'm new to this alternate tuning business. What's the trick? Banjo strings?

Tuning the G down to D is the trick (it's a drone string), not up.

Huge fan. Saw them a bunch In the late 90s and (very) early 00s and listened to Lula hundred of times.

At that time, Paul played through a Mesa 400 (the one with the graphic EQ) into a Road Ready 2x15. The part of the pedal chain I remember is a Metal Zone into a Tube Screamer. The magical chorus tuning was CGCC (I asked, he told me). But of course DADD will give you the same effect, just not all the notes you need for the songs on Lula. And all the shows I saw him play, he used that Precision Elite.

I saw Shiner open up for Burning Airlines in something like the cafeteria of Towson College in '99 I believe. I had never heard them before. They performed all of Lula Divinia and I was blown away. Bought the CD and became a fan for life. I remember scoping out Paul's pedal board and the Metal Zone was there - I actually think that was his main tone. It was massive. I could swear he was playing a Jazz Bass back then too but...well, '99 was a long time ago.

What are the best strings to use for Paul's sound? I'm a guitar player that has been using a Danelectro longhorn bass since the 90s in all my home recordings. I have finally bought a good bass and I have no idea where to begin with strings.

Paul has a fair bit going thru his signal chain so that any reasonable set of roundwounds should get you in the ballpark so long as they're not too old. DR High Beams, Dunlops, Ernie Balls, etc should do the trick.

PM's recorded tone is arguably more dependent on the basses he uses (Fender Elite), amps, mics, DI's, and hands (his technique alone is probably the core component). As an engineer and producer, Paul's sound is big on tape saturation and gain structure through hitting gear at certain levels.

Shiner filmed a set (a glorified rehearsal in their words) of them playing their new album at Record Bar in KC where Paul often does live sound. The whole set for the audio AND video footage is up on the above link and you can watch for free, but I threw them ten bucks for the live set to support one of my favourite bands. For those that have never seen these guys live, it's the next best thing IMO.

I'm about half way thru the set and Paul's playing a Fender P with a typically great dirty tone (not his Elite II which is on a stand behind him + his Jack Cassidy Epi). Lots of good shots of his baseball grip fretting technique too!

The audio mix is really good for a live set and Josh, Alan and Jason are in outstanding form too. JG is one of my favourite drummers and he absolutely kills it. His snare sounds are always fantastic.

I just came here to share this, haha! I'm glad they did this rundown (the whole of it, because Allen Epley is one of my favorite musicians out there). Pretty in depth and clear. I could not love any more Paul's approach to bass playing and tone.
