Can’t You??

Uh, the kind of jam that doesn't go anywhere.

Problem with the word "jammin'" is that everyone has their own definition of it. For me, it's getting together with musician friends (and non-musicians but music lovers) and play actual songs. Everyone gets to play 8-10 songs and then we rotate and mix band members. Lots of fun!

Yeah, I'm "that guy" around here. People start organizing a "jam" and I have a dozen questions. I also lay down a few rules.

I don't mind a loose musical situation. But showing up "whenever" and getting started "whenever" and ending "whenever" isn't my thing.

I value music. But I also value my time. If you just wanna hang out and smoke up/drink and eat pizza, you don't need a bass player for that. I'll cookout with my family. If you wanna make some music, I'm in.

i value music, but i don't value watching a bunch of people order pizza or eat, so don't invite me to jam till everyone has eaten dinner and are ready to play.

Let us know if you ever get the tape of the 'jam'; love to hear it.....
Hahaha...ha! This particular studio, I don't know how they stay open. It's a beautiful space, filled with high end gear, but the people who run it seem to have no semblance of method (or timeliness) to their madness. I've done some playing there before, and it seems you're always waiting on someone for everything; getting the door unlocked, getting into the cable room to set up the amp they said they'd provide, getting things miced/DI'd and ran into the board, getting levels/sound check, etc.. Seriously every time you turn around, whoever was just there helping get things set up is now nowhere to be found, and everything takes forever because of it.

Unfortunately, I've been party to more than a few "jams" similar to this. Like the singer who was so wasted, he fell asleep during a song, the whole time leaning on his mic stand, the only thing keeping him from falling. Or the guitar player who in the middle of a song, stumbles to his two 12 combo amp, sits down, then passes out while producing an ear piercing feedback squeal.

Good point, it could have been worse! It may have gotten that bad by the end, but I wasn't sticking around any longer to find out.

First off, very well written, But lots to unpack here...
So the other day a drummer
Well, there's the problem right there. If the story stopped right there, I would feel no less frustrated and empathetic.

for a jam
Strike Two.

dude is a tad out there and spacey
Usually red flags, but OK—some of my favorite people fit this description, so benefit of the doubt free pass on this one.

The door won't unlock
Strike Three.

The pianist starts noodling
If Quentin Tarantino we're directing this, now there would be gunplay.

Drummer is still trying to figure out a pizza to order
His stomach is in the right place, but his head is in the pizza's final destination.

playing nothing and just coming and going
...so like a flea market.

One person shows up with their bike
Strike Four. Yuppie hell.

random people streaming in and out are evidently vocalists
Vocal jam? Gosh—my favorite kind.

there's no PA.
Strike Five. It's a studio, for goodness sake. There's a PA somewhere, but no one had the organizational forethought to arrange for it. Tsk, tsk.

the drummer disappeared
My favorite magic trick.

guess I'll be the bigger person, what's your name?"
The direct implication is that you were small for not asking his name. No. Just, no. Oh Quentin? Tight two-shot on this gunplay. Capture bike guy's face exploding.

They offered to give me some money for my time
Ok, now we're talking. I totally would have done this too.
