Can a ding/dent cause more damage if left unrepaired?

I've got a ding on the body of my Schecter Riot. It's not somewhere I can see or feel, but can it lead to further damaging the wood underneath if I don't seal it up?

Depending on what the finish is and how bad the ding is more finish can flake off.
So basically the finish damage can get bigger, but it won't do anything to the wood underneath other than expose it to air.
