Can a note fit anywhere in the progression?

I've been playing with this since reading this thread.. It's kinda fun. As has been said, it never sounds bad as such, it just sounds unresolved. If the note could talk, it would screaming "don't leave me hanging bro!". One more note makes it sounds intentional and kinda cool... to a degree

Most importantly the melody and the bass down below, the rest fill in the blanks.

You can play c through the entire song in your example if you want (Everyday People by Sly pedals G). It's a structural foundation, and the type of foundation determines where you can build the house and what goes on top.

Try different inversions (CEG-EGC-GCE (Everyday People). Or, while the guitar plays power chord C-G you play the third, and so on. It will help define your sound. The ear's the guide.

This is a very basic question. Can any note in a scale fit in any part of a simple chord progression?

Such as in the key of C: The progression of C - F - G. Could any one note in the C scale fit over any of those three chords?

Dirt simple "rule". Over the C use the C pentatonic, over the F use the F pentatonic, etc.

As many of the pentatonic notes you feel fits. R-3-5-8 or R-3-5-6, yes what ever sounds best TO YOU.
