Can anyone identify these crusty ancient strings?

Hey folks. I finally found a good deal on a 1981 4001. This one has been in a case in a closet for ages and is a bit crusty.

I don't recall seeing roundwounds like this for a really long time. Anyone remember strings with ends like this?

Thanks!

Three years ago I bought a set of Elites Players that looked like that.
Hmm could be but the shop I just bought it from is in Wisconsin. I was told "an old guy" traded in 2 4001's he had bought new and never really played. Unless he was touring The UK, etc in the early 80s they would be a pretty hard string to find in the states.

If it were me, I’d use some of that “good deal” savings on a new set of strings. Of course if your tetanus shots is up to date…….

Absolutley. I have multiple string sets in stock ready to go on once this bass arrives and will be going through a full tear down and disinfection process. Almost 50 years of funk on this one lol was told it was stuck in a closet in its case since the early 80s.

Those grey silked ends look very much like GHS Super Steels. I can post a pic of the ones I have when I get home later tonight. In about 4 hrs.

I'll be able to confirm on Friday when. It shows up. If you expand the photos these things are as rusty as tow-mater. Lol
When I made the comment about them looking like the Super Steels, I was on my smartphone and couldn't see the details very well. Now that I've taken a closer look at them on my laptop, I see what you mean. No silk over the spirally ends.

Just for reference, here's the pic of the Super Steels with the grey silk, which is almost the same color as the string itself. The only thing is they have all-silver ball ends.
