Can anyone really play LIKE Jaco?

Local band in my area asking for a Jaco like bass player and I just thought it was funny. Asking for someone like Jaco is a big ask imo. Slightly unrealistic?

Dude that ad has been up, religiously refreshed and reposted for AT LEAST ten years. Sometimes he requires the applicant to be a Berzerklee grad. I think I actually emailed him and called him out on being a weirdo, and got some strange reply back.

Whether or not one appreciates Jaco’s genius, a very objective measure of his unique voice can be heard on the recordings in “Word of Mouth Revisited.”

(IF you can get past all of YouTubes “Ads.” Good luck. I can’t

Those recordings include a veritable who’s who of top tier players, all of whom have tremendous respect for Jaco; and all of whom did their level best to cop his groove.

To my ear, Victor Bailey came the closest; but, really an educated listener can tell the diff right away on any of them.

It is what it is. Won’t be another like him. It’s a privilege that we have the audio record of his times.

There are guys out there who have Jaco's chops because it's been 50 years since Jaco demonstrated for up and coming players the possibilities with the bass.

The "no vets" part is weird...do they mean no seasoned players, or no one who is ex-military?

Weird.

I also believe that any band with the chops to match a Jaco-esque bassist already knows a couple of Jaco-esque bassists. So if they are that good, why do they need Craigslist to find a professional player of that caliber?
I think they were referring to themselves as NYC and New Orleans veterans - after seeing it your way at first, that occurred to me as a possibility.

Reads like chatGPT is starting a poopy band nobody wants to hear. When an artist writes like that for an ad, IMO, they’d better be a goshdarn musical genius afterwards.
Even if I wanted to play and sound and make music like Jaco I wouldn’t send that entity any messages.

Musicianship is like water it seeks its own level! ;):)
Back in the 70's when I lived in the tri-state area we had a music newspaper called the Aquarium that a had a big musicians wanted/Craigslist style free ads in the back of the paper, it had some of the same delusional posts looking for players year after year. If you are in the NYC area and you think you can't find players as good as you are, maybe you're not as good as you think.

Exactly, perfect way of stating it. There's a competent professional musician living on every block in NYC. Probably on Long Island too.

Yeah I've been seeing this ad for years as well. For some reason I figured veterans meant like no "hired guns".

One of the finest, most iconic musicians of our lifetimes. Big shoes to fill. Just incredible music both solo as well as with others like Weather Report, Joni etc. The world of recorded music would be a sadder place without there having been a Jaco. Top of the heap in my personal top 5 bassists of all time. Easily and earned.
"In the style of" sure but I have never heard anybody could exactly cop the style, feel and vibe of Jaco.
He was one in a million.
