Can anyone really play LIKE Jaco?

Local band in my area asking for a Jaco like bass player and I just thought it was funny. Asking for someone like Jaco is a big ask imo. Slightly unrealistic?

He won’t get any responses. He’s been at it for years. He has no band. He’s also looking for white/caucasian female singers only and constantly picks fights with other people on the board.

Bass solos and soloing are very common in many genres, such as jazz, fusion, and funk.....we just happen to be on TalkBass where a great many older players play classic rock, blues, and related genres where bass soloing is less common.........the problem with conversations like this one is many players think the entire musical universe revolves around the subset of genres they listen to and play. This isnt the case
…and a large swath of people are very pejorative about music that isn’t what they like. We’re talking about a bass player getting a few solos on this thread and people are triggered. Heaven forbid somebody brings slap bass into it.

Personally I’m a guy who digs jazz, I have about 60 hours of jazz course credit in a capacity something like a minor at UT Austin, and I’ve played scores of jazz gigs. I find Jaco’s music to be interesting but actually a bit inaccessible. Some of the stuff he wrote and played was so harmonically out there as to not exactly be pleasant to listen to. Other stuff is, but it never surprises me when a person who doesn’t spend a lot of time listening to jazz doesn’t enjoy Jaco’s playing.

By which I’m also not casting shade against those people who don’t like Jaco. Jazz is an ear muscle, a language. It makes more sense to people who spend time with it. Kind of like those old stand-up jet skis that are kind of hard to ride at first.

Right? I check CL less and less every year because it's a cesspool, but i'm pretty sure every time i've checked since 2014 when i moved back to NYC from the west coast i've seen some form of this ad. And then i moved abroad for a few years, moved back a couple years ago and it's still there.

One of us should put up a copy ad, but translated to what the ad is really saying :whistle::roflmao::
I'm a mid-grade player so i'm going to demand the rest of my band be elite players to pick up my slack and help my band match how good i think i am in my mind. I don't want to get better myself; i need your playing for that.

Professional players can see right through me and won't put up with my BS. They often have input on how to improve our songs or my playing, and i take any suggestion for improvement as a personal threat. Ergo, you can't be a "veteran player." You need to be young and inexperienced so i can tell you what to play, and then you need to exceed my expectations, and then shut up and smile.

Pocket/Rhythm bassists won't cut it for us because i actually have no idea about Jaco's playing and don't realize every melodic line or blazing fast solo Jaco played had immense pocket and rhythm. I just want you to overplay all the notes as fast as possible.

Must have pedals for lead because i don't understand playing a lead line is more about a musical focal point of the song than turning on distortion.

CL is full of these people. I think they're basically just autistic. Some of the people I've met . . . . yikes.

But every now and then I do go back to CL, even post a quick ad just to see what comes back. It's mostly people sending garbage punk demos that get EXTREMELY offended if you don't reply. But most of my professional life at this point can be traced back to connections that happened as a result of another connection made through someone I met through CL, and I met a couple cool people this last go-round.

Who is Jaco?
This is a fair statement.
I never heard of him until reaching this website so he is obviously a local identity, so to be fair and open minded I fished around and bought a couple of dvd's to take a look.
Not my style and certainly not a commercial song writer which explains his unknown status and the local cult following.

Don't forget, it is only in recent (internet years) that even the Motown players have become better known. Jamerson and Babbit weren't exactly a household names either.

Dunn was better known because he played with Clapton who was covered by the rock magazines like Circus which was circulated globally. Jonie Mitchell was a one hit wonder never heard of again in my background, so it pays to be fair about local vs global standing. There are better Aussie bands than Americans commonly know of, so it works both ways as it will equally for other nationalities.

These characters on CL crack me up. They are sp particular about what they want, not just skills, but age and equipment. But, they offer nothing in return. All we know from this ad is the poster has a 300 W amp, possibly from the last bass player he lured into his basement. Is the "we" he refers to other players or the voices living in his head?

I've had a few gems of people come through CL for me. But most of the time

Oh man. Your success record with CL is way higher than mine. :meh::laugh:

Whether or not one appreciates Jaco’s genius, a very objective measure of his unique voice can be heard on the recordings in “Word of Mouth Revisited.”

(IF you can get past all of YouTubes “Ads.” Good luck. I can’t

Those recordings include a veritable who’s who of top tier players, all of whom have tremendous respect for Jaco; and all of whom did their level best to cop his groove.

To my ear, Victor Bailey came the closest; but, really an educated listener can tell the diff right away on any of them.

It is what it is. Won’t be another like him. It’s a privilege that we have the audio record of his times.

Ublockorigin - never see another ad anywhere.

Funny how people take me serious!

he is internationally famous, hardly a local phenom. as for Joni, well, my friend...

I beg to differ, I never connected to his music, cant stand that guy to a point where his playing is irrelevent. I feel the same for Satriani or Vai.
Guess virtuoso playing is not my thing...

How can you "not stand" a guy you've never met? Maybe you'd be best friends in the world if you actually met any of them, regardless of how you felt about their music or stage persona.
