Can bass waves actually hurt you?

O I heard about that .... it was to be OVER 200db but NO one will talk about it... NASA or Navy or somthing like that.....

I am sure this would would be easier to do to something under pressure in water... Not saying it cant be done to humans in the open air but it would be different and probably harder. Plus i believe sound waves are much harder on things that are rigid than things that are soft... which tends to absorb alot of the energy.
 
i've noticed when playing my rig of doom at loud volumes that it can make me a bit dizzy/nautious which i think has to do with the equilibrium fluid in the ear being disturbed.

there are many documented studies of the effects of sound on the body (as well as mind/spirit)....just do a search you'll find a lot of info....some of it more of holistic healing, some of it more scientific method, some of it from government reseach (such as the sound wave "stun" gun).

Of course, according to Parliment/Funkadelic...funk music sound waves will cure any disease, just lay your problem on the speakers :)
 
There are a lot of big numbers being thrown around in this thread... 180, 200 dB. The amount of energy required to make a signal that loud is astronomical, and not likely to happen in any situation any of us will ever be in our lifetime.

GCool's (I'm assuming properly measured) 156 dB is so ridiculously loud that I wouldn't even want to be NEAR the vehicle creating that kind of noise. Even the best hearing protection available leaves from for substantial hearing damage being in or near something that loud.

Yes, it would be easier to do with water than air. It's about compressability and not rigidity. Air will compress and water won't.
 
Somewhere I read a study that loud music/noises can release endorphins and cause a natural high. And it's possible to get addicted to loud music or noises. Hot peppers can do the same.

I don't know of any physical studies on low frequencies causing physical damage beyond hearing. I imaging vibrating recliners would get a lot of law suits.
 
sometime between 1969 and 1972 about low freq. for riot control. It might have been included in an article about cone excursion.
If memory serves, the article was about a French remote control cube type van that was actually a woofer and produced some ultra low type freq. that had a sympathetic vibration the same as a human spleen. A few minutes of exposure caused discomfort, a few more started to bruise the spleen and the pain increased. Something like 1/2 an hour of exposure caused a rupture of the spleen.
 
One of my tutors at Leeds college of music told me that the brown frequency was like 3hz or something stupid, so it's unlikely you'll get a system that can reproduce enough of it for it to actually take effect.

Dunno bout the science but there were a couple of Capdown gigs where the bass made made my mate really ill, which is strange considering all the Dub nights he goes to now. On the subject of Dub, if your ever at a Dub night don't stand next to the subs THAT's bad for your health, no amount of tinny guitar noise or feedback compares to having your eardrums ripped by sub bass. Having your ears pierced by treble or high mid is nothing on feeling like their about to be pushed into your ear fluid...
 
The short answer is yes. Sound can harm you if employed in the correct manner.

Obviously hearing damage is very easy to come by while playing loud music. That is not the kind of damage that I'm talking about, but should always be respected. Thats if you care about having any hearing later in life.

Sound waves can be used for purposes besides music, sonograms, and sonar location are others.

There have been experiments done using sound much like a light beam is turned into lazer light. You could focus a sound transmission so that a very narrow wave pattern was projected. The result being that only the target heard the sound.

Acoustics is a large field of science that is way more complex than people realize.
