Can I connect a standard amp to a cab?

Ok, so...first post. Anyway, I have an ampeg BA-115 and I do what I can to get the most sound out of it that I can (using a pedal to increase volume, setting treble to 9, mid to 10, and bass to 8), but my guitarist is WAY louder than me with his amp volume only set to 5 so I need to get more power. I wanted to buy an 8X10 ampeg, but to get that AND the head would be about 2 grand (the wife will kill me...). Is it possible to like, remove the cover of the amp and run the internal cables into the cab so I don't have to spend $1,000 on the head (at least for now)? I suppose I could go with a cheaper setup like acoustic (which is only 1k for the head AND the cab), but I would really like to go with ampeg.

Possible but not very productive. BA115 head has only 100w, so while it would get pretty loud with an 810, it may still not be enough to compete with volume freak guitarists.

I haven't tried out a Carvin amp yet, but that price sounds pretty good! I plugged into an Acoustic full stack that was $1,000 brand new and it sounded pretty good. Seems like a lot of people on here like Carvin so they must make pretty good amps.

Indeed. You're not resigning yourself to low quailty rig by only spending a grand. $1,000, in reality, is PLENTY to get a great rig. My 200W Acoustic combo can pump out more power than my guitarist's 150W Fender and my drummer combined, easily. I've never had to turn volume past 4, with the guitard always around 7 and 8. And in my opinion, it sounds really good. Only $350. It sounds like you want more than that, but you see what I'm saying.

I have a BX500 for a year now with no problems and two BRX210n cabs. I heard the Acoustic with the 310 sound good too.
Take your time and I'm sure you'll find something you'll like.

Do your own research here on TB. Not only is it fun, but there are literally thousands of threads on different amp/cab combinations that would get you where you need to be.
Just use the search function and go exploring.

Some keywords: Ampeg, Avatar, Gallien, Carvin, etc. Find out what others are saying about the multitude of great products on today's market.

Perhaps, but an 8x10 will run a minimum of 6dB more sensitive than a 115, and that's the equivalent of upping his power to 400w. If the intent is to get an 8x10 and top eventually I'd do the 810 now and run it with the current head, then add a new head when he can afford it.

I tend to think of 100w not being what it once was because of all these youngsters who scoff at it so I tend to try to adjust my answers for the room. But 100w can still be very loud in an 810 for sure.
