can somebody explain what this is and how it works

yeah, it's not about the sound it makes, it's just finger practice. still way to short. I don't spend most of my time camping on the first 4 frets.
I don't know about anyone else here... but if I were going to practice scales and modes I'd rather hear them than see them if I had to pick one or the other. I think it's a silly device myself... I would rather spend 10x as much on something closer to a bass, even if it were only a 4 string (I pretty much play 5s..) .. as I said.. at least I can work out my ears and my hands..

You can actually plug this one in and play it, or practice on the couch in front of the TV. And it's easy to carry. I may get one myself one of these days.

Great idea actually. I've spent countless hours stuck in a van or on a bus traveling to shows ect and trying to pull out a real bass to work on stuff is an impossibility most of the time. For players who are mobile, this is a blessing.
The UBass is portable and you can hear what you're playing. There are acoustic and electric ones. Short scale (baritone Uke size ) so if you need the correct scale it's not for you. There is a cheap one at Rhondo music now. Thinking hard about getting one.
If you want to understand what it is all about [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] It is a reasonably well thought out and executed product but not for everyone. As I said I would rather have a compact travel bass and I like the Traveler bass pictured above but this may appeal to some people and the same company also makes travel basses. They have so many models that they either are reasonably successful at selling them or else they invested a lot of money up front to blitz the market with many models, at the risk of losing that money.
Who needs that silly thing!? Just get a bottle of hand lotion and call it good!

I travel with work a lot and am working on my left hand technique a ton lately. This would help. I am not going to buy one, but if I was handed one for free, I would throw it in my suitcase.
Doesn't seem terribly useful to me. I feel that right hand technique is far more important than left hand, and this doesn't help at all with that. Also without sounding in tune, how do you know how cleanly and accurately your playing/practice on this is?

There are a lot of misconceptions as to what the thing is even for in this thread. Its literally just to practice scales modes and shapes, or work out your left hand when in an environment that is not suitable for a bass of any size. The manufacturer even recommends you use a real instrument whenever possible in their q&a section. It's not for performing or even song practice, and is not meant to replace a real instrument in any situation in which you could play a real instrument. I wouldn't buy one, but I could easily understand a gigging or touring musician using one to keep loose at work or on the road.
