Double Bass Can this double bass be restored?

This is my first time on your website, I know very little about basses so I need some help. On Monday I purchased this bass very inexpensively for a $150.00. It is in bad shape with some very long cracks on the back and many on the top and side. It is not made of plywood and looks very old. The finish or stain that was applied is horrible with drip errors. I would like to know if this bass is worth restoring or is it just a wallhanger?

You've bought yourself a Tyrolean blockless bass from around 1900. Good deal! Yes, it's restorable. Somebody really went nuts with a disk sander I see...

Just out of curiousity, would the complete restoration on of a bass such as this include adding a neck block? Or does the "if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it" rule apply?

wow... that's a nice looking bass... and for around £75... unbelievable..!!
i have seen people playing basses in worse shape than that

You can probably get it playing with the neck system as-is, but the overstand and neck angle will not be optimal. This will be especially troublesome if you are setting it up for bowing.

That looks really good , amazing deal. If you restore it can probably be a top instrument , but it will take a lot of work and $ .
