Wow; wasn't expecting that many responses!
The strings are Rotosound somethingorother, with a .175 F# string and a .130 (I think) B. I filed the nut to fit, set the intonation, adjusted the trussrod... I didn't just loosen up the tuning pegs and hope for the best.

The sound is on the dark side unplugged, and the onboard preamp can make it as trebly as a guitar if I want. So, it's not the electronics, but strings are a good suggestion, thanks.
I realized after a bunch of reading (mostly old TB threads, also some of these responses), and playing a couple of other random basses, that mine is not actually that dark for how low it's tuned; the low B has about as much harmonics and clarity as a typical low E. However, I'm down to F# and aiming for a piano-like sound, not motown/dub.
Because it's tuned down to F# (23.something Hz) and could use all the length I can get. If I played a particular 34" 5-string in person and felt it was as clear on the low B as my Ibanez, great (not to mention easier to play), but for something bought online I'd have a hard time going with a 34".
Derp. Why didn't I check Schecter's catalog, given that the last time I replaced a guitar on specs, I went with a Blackjack C7? My one beef with that guitar is that the ergonomics and feel are inferior to the LTD it replaced - the neck doesn't feel as natural, and worse, the stylish carved body leaves a sharp ridge at my right forearm. A few other Schecters I've played all feel kinda...clunky, the necks especially. How do you like the feel of yours in your hands?
