Can you play this fast with a pick?

Why am I not surprised by all the people saying "oh it's so noisy and horrible!" :p

Yes I can, I learnt to shred when learning alot of NOFX a few years ago, have to do it in a new song and it shows it's been a while, got back into it quick enough though. Fat Mike has a fair amount of stamina. keeping that up in the amount of songs he does it in.

Playing that fast is simply a matter of practice, but that clip doesn't sound very musical.

I can play faster with a pick than I can with fingers. But for many songs fingers sound better. With a pick I can get a 60s flat wound palm muted sound.

I auditioned for a band that played a lot of Metallica. They loved my tone and playing butI could not bring myself to even listen to the whole song on most of the Metallica stuff.

To me Metallica and Van Halen are both good cover bands that write below average originals.

Man, I hate this guy more every time I'm exposed to him. In addition to the previous comments about his fret hand not keeping up with his picking, can we also talk about how terrible his note choices are? Somebody should mail him a book on key signatures. Also, even though I didn't think it was possible, I like this even less than the one on the record.

I think there are some good punk bassists out there, and it bothers me that this guy's always the first one to get the credit just because of how needlessly showy he is.

Speed and soloing aside, there are many examples of very tasteful bass playing on the Rancid records. Everyone always comes back to the soloing...or the super fast stuff, however there is a whole catalog of music that is quite different from that stuff with Matt Freeman playing versitile lines. I say this being a huge fan, but then again I've listened to all of the records. I guess you either like it or you don't.
