Can you play this fast with a pick?

lol, do you guys really think Matt Freeman cares about key signatures and missing notes, and then being pulled apart by some nerds on TB whilst he's touring the world and making a living?

I'm well aware he probably doesn't. Additionally, I'll probably go so far as to say my dislike for him is a bit misguided. So far as I actually care, he can go on sucking all he wants. My anger is more in response to people who think that he is the best at what he does. There are a handful of punk bassists that I think can absolutely slay him, and instead of getting their due credit, they get overlooked in favor of Matt Freeman. And as much credit as he gets for the solo in "Maxwell Murder", I think it's fair that somebody be vocal in opposition once in a while, just to balance things out.

Do you think the other bassists care and want the 'credit'? I just saw Bri from AWS play the other night and chatted to him afterwards, he's a far better musician than Matt IMO, though from talking to him, I highly doubt if you said to him 'do you care that 12 year olds think matt freeman is a better bassist than you?' he'd say 'yes'.

No need to get angry over it.

Speed and soloing aside, there are many examples of very tasteful bass playing on the Rancid records. Everyone always comes back to the soloing...or the super fast stuff, however there is a whole catalog of music that is quite different from that stuff with Matt Freeman playing versitile lines. I say this being a huge fan, but then again I've listened to all of the records. I guess you either like it or you don't.

Yes, I'm quoting myself from earlier. For those of you who want to base your opinion on Freeman's playing after watching a couple of youtube cell phone videos of bass solos, or hearing Maxwell Murder...you're really not being very objective as a musician. The guy has been recording for over twenty years. To reduce what he does down to "OMG those speedy solos suck" or whatever some people say here is ridiculous. Do yourselves a favor and actually listen to a few more examples if you really want to form an intelligent opinion about someones playing. There are plenty of bass players who's style I don't care for, but still show respect for because I know they are talented.

I hate to throw this cliché out there, but Metallica most definitely died with Cliff.

To the OP, yes I can play that fast with a pick, usually I don't bother though, I generally opt for a more melodic style but being a large black and death metal fan, a lot of stuff calls for very fast picking.

A lot of guys showing their age with the, "ahhhh this heavy metal lark is all just noise!" That comment annoys me to no end. As has already been mentioned, to the untrained ear, a lot of prog/jazz/fusion sounds completely random and unmusical, same applies.

Though new Metallica is a far cry from how well metal can be played/written.

And to the guy who said metallica are a good cover band who write poor originals, give Master of Puppets a listen. I wouldn't call it their best but its the most....accessible to people who don't particularly like them.

And just so I don't sound like a Metallica fanboy, to clear up, I don't particularly like thrash myself
