Can you trigger a Rack effect w/ effects looper

So Ive been trying to do some research on this subject but i havent exactly been able to phrase my keywords right to bring up any worthwhile information.

So the question is can I trigger a rackmounted effect with an effects looper. Its easier to understand using examples.

If I wanted to trigger on and off a dbx 120a, which doesnt have a footswitch, could I use and some how hook it up to a looper such as a LoopMaster pedal and take it in and out of the signal.

I apologize if this is an obvious question or if its been answered before. its just the searching hasnt come up with anything and its been bother some.

Yes, it can be done. For the sake of searches and consistency, the word you want is "bypass", not "trigger". You want to be able to bypass the 120A using a footswitch. There are two approaches:

1) Use any normal bypass-loop pedal e.g. Boss LS-2, Radial Bigshot, Loop-Master, etc. The problem is you have to run two long cables from the loop box to and from the dbx unit in your rack.

2) Make a relay-switch loop device that would sit in the back of your rack, with short cables to/from the dbx; it would need only one long cable from the relay box to a small footswitch on your pedalboard. The relay box is not a difficult thing to build, but you do need some DIY skills.
