Canadian Rock

The Tragically Hip are pretty bad-ass, IMO. Just good solid rock and roll. No frills...and Gordon Downie is possibly one of the most entertaining vocalists/stage personalities in all of Canadian History*. His ranting/banter always cracks me up on their live stuff.

* - completely unfounded claim.

I presume the Constellation stable includes Metric and Stars, right? I don't pay too much attention to BSS and its offshoots because You Forgot It in People did absolutely nothing for me.

One of the better-known Canadian hardcore bands is Propagandhi. Terrible, IMO, but the hardcore kids like them.

I have BSS newest one, I got it in a flurry of ripping whilst I was in my school's radio station. I gave it a cursory listen, I liked it, but I haven't listened to it again.

Propagandhi actually reminds me; The Weakerthans were the first indie rock band it was okay for punks and hardcore kids to genuinely like. Good band, I haven't listened to them lately though, nor their most recent release.

They're too preachy.

A hardcore band? Too preachy? Noooooo!

I will disagree with that Jimmy Ray. I saw the Hip on the Trouble at the Hen House Tour and I left disappointed. It might be due to the fact that I was in the nose bleeds but the performance seemed pretty unispiring, my wife also agreed it felt uninspiring like they were going through the motions. That was the first and last time I saw them. My lead singer has seen them 6 times. 4 in Vancouver and 2 in Montreal and he would say they are 50/50. The good shows were really good and he ranks them as some of the best he has ever seen, the bad shows were pretty bad. 2 of the 3 shows that were good were in small venues.
I think I would like to see thew hip again maybe in the States at a smaller venue but I just don't think they can pull off a big venue.
Don't get me wrong I like the Hip. I prefer the older stuff, but I just don't think they are a great live band.

Yeah man, the power kept going out just as the songs started picking up. It was a sweet time. It's cool to see another guy from "Windsor Essex county"
Haha indeed! The killed the power like 4 times! That was a great concert..Tea Party was good a few years ago, sad to see them go.
Cool to see another person from Windsor/Essex! Small world! Maybe I will bump into you at the festival this year hehe.

Living on the border, I've heard pretty much heard/seen all that is Canadian. One of my personals favs... The Odds... whom are apparently on a "permanent hiatus" for sometime now. Sloan kicks out some bitter and entertaining garage rock now and again too.

As far as the T-Hip, IMO, Trouble at the Hen House was the beginning of the end.

Check out Dominic Troiano. He replaced Joe Walsh in the James Gang and was a member of the Guess Who before moving back to Canada. I found one of his cds by accident and bought it completely in the dark. Boy, did that instinct pay off this time. Deep grooves with great musicianship all around.

I researched the guy on the net and found out he passed away last year. :( He was one of the bigger artists in Canada and his name is hardly known in the States at all. Crazy.

I think the Tragically Hip have grown beyond the point of merely being music, to being a huge part of our Canadian summer culture. It seems to me that the Hip are almost synonymous to backyard bbqs and cottage parties.

Almost two pages, and no mention yet of IMO one of Canada's best live bands: Big Sugar. I've probably seen them more often than any other band, and I always find that Gordie Johnson is able to connect with the crowd like few other frontmen. They will be sadly missed now that they've disbanded, although my ears will be happy as they were LOUD.

Here's a couple great indie bands out of Toronto: White Cowbell Oklahoma, and Kill Cheerleader.
