Cancelled a NYE gig

Can't they get a sub?

I know Boise to Portland is a bit of a haul, but no worse than Houston to Dallas (I've done Portland To Boise, and Houston to Dallas numerous times...).
A sub bassist should be able to be found and gotten up to speed in time to make the gig...
Whoa triple post don't know what caused that.

Yeah I considered suggesting a sub, though I would imagine any sub worth his salt in Portland is already booked. Upright too, makes it even more unlikely, especially for the money.

You might be pleasantly surprised... Portland is a LOT like Austin music scene wise, or at least it used to be... Throwing upright into the mix complicates matters a bit, but still not impossible...

Yeah, a wedding & NYE gig should be around $1000 minimum, and that's the "real good friends price". Beyond that, get backline locally for that! Hauling a PA 100's of miles doesn't make much sense at all. I'd even be hoping for a bass rig backline on a gig like that. Your BL sounds a tad on the green side.

man...

i am sorry to hear this. not just the band part, family troubles are tough on a deeper level.

i get into a similar situation with my side band. i play in a trio that does originals and the other guys in the band have no sympathy either. i work 2 jobs and have 2 kids (2 yrs and 7 months). needless to say i am very busy and have another main band. i am lucky and unlucky in that my wife is one of 9 kids (great for babysitting but bad because things ALWAYS come up).

this other band plays cheap gigs $40-50/guy and most are 2-hour drives round trip. there are gigs i say no to because being away from the family on a saturday for 8+ hours for $40 is not happening.

the problem is that they get so upset with me. they won't fire me because it's my PA and my practice space. i'd quit but they'd have nothing if i left. they act like they tolerate my situation but the vibe at most practices and gigs says otherwise. the one guy is young and single with no ties so i understand him being upset but theother guy, has 3 children! they are older and more independent but, man, you were in my situation just a few years back!

reading stuff like this helps me out....thanks for posting. i may quit....you definitely should.
Wow, yeah crazy how similar that is. I don't have THE practice space, but I have the more comfortable one, only its 20 miles from the other guys, who are 5 minutes apart.

Quitting, well hearing about his Chicago vacation plans sure makes me consider it, on top of his response.

He was wanting to try to fly me out, or pay someone to help with my dad.(which he would never go for)
Ridiculous I know, that's why I started the thread. Not worth the nightmare.

The words wedding, New years eve and $500.00 should never be used in the same sentence. I would ask him if $500.00 was your share since you are talking about almost a 1000 miles round trip.

Thank you! A freaking NYE wedding?????? There is only one kind of gig that pays better than a wedding and that's a NYE gig! But BOTH!

Sorry, OP. Your friend is an idiot.

Of course you're doing the right thing with family and all. But it should have never EVER come to this. A traveling NYE wedding should be $500 PER MUSICIAN AT LEAST. And really more than that in some markets.

Geeeeez. Do the other bands in your area a huge favor and keep this fiasco a secret. If any reputable band finds out they may hunt your buddy down and ship him to Alaska.

Seriously, have him call a few booking agents and price what a band would be for a NYE wedding. I bet the LOWEST quote he would get would be $4,000. And I'm not even sure he could get that kind of deal.

You're going to spend $150 on gas alone to travel to and from the gig. I assume that will come out of your third of the $500. That leaves $17 for some 7-11 hot dogs on the way and no motel. The only way I'd do that is if it's a friend of the band - a very good friend of the band.

Regular wedding in June, extra-special friend price- maybe $1000, plus a P.A. fee for the whole shebang. And that's even pushin' it.

Out of state, and on NYE?! I don't know how you can even type as I'd still be laughing too hard.

It really isn't. Depending on the number of quality musicians $5-$6,000 isn't even out of the ordinary for a holiday wedding. We did a few for $7500-$8000 on July 4th weekends. There are a few bands around here that get more than that for every wedding.
Well what I meant was get sleeplessknights band hooked up to do it(for the right fee) but yeah I get your point and agree.

hah! I had to turn down a gig offer for NYE this past week. We would have been the opening act. The offer was $100 TOTAL, more if we sold tickets. Nah, thanks, gonna pass on that "opportunity".

OP: your situation is unenviable. Dump this loser.
