Cannabis

Pretty much. Politics aside, I've known enough people who have permanently smoked themselves stupid. I'm not talking basic zoned out stoner, but jaw-dropping how the !@#%@ did you make it through an open door stupid.

+1. Regular use has an unmistakeable affect on many people. I've seen guys breeze through 4 years of college, then do an accelerated masters program. 10 years after that, they could barely hold a job because of issues with recall and short term memory problems.

I know for a fact that smoking heavily in my 20's has affected me as well.

I was talking about vapor not smoke here in that question, to see if there was a difference and if taking pot by vaporization would be "not damaging" since most of the health issues since to be linked with smoke in the lungs.

Perhaps. I don't know anyone who uses clean and vaporized pot. I'd probably venture to say that there probably wouldn't be any studies that I'd consider definitive based on the stastical mumbo jumbo I was forced to learn in school. I'm sure "studies" exist, but without long term studies, most of that stuff is too biased.

There are already lots of points and links to statistics in this thread, so I'm going to avoid pointing those out since they're already easy to find.

On a personal note:

When I was in high school/Elementary school, I was told over and over again that Pot was a gateway drug and that by smoking it, I was going to want to try other drugs as well.

Luckily, my dad was fairly honest about it. He told me that he smoked way too much when he was younger and that smoking some would not kill me, but that it would be unwise to try it in the company of unsavory people, since I didn't know how I would react. He mentioned that, if you're in the arts, It would be an exception to the rule if I never encountered someone offering me pot.

Since a couple of years ago, I've smoked a few times. I really don't care one way or the other about it. If it's there, I might have some. If not, whatever. That seems to be the rule with most of the people I know.

I don't think it's going to kill you and eat your children like some folks say. I would advise against smoking it every waking minute due to the fact that too much of anything can have a negative influence on you, but it will probably not have much of an effect at all.

Plus, for those of you who don't want to smoke it, you can always eat it. Brownies are delicious and have a stronger hit. :D

(I'm not targeting anyone in particular when I say "you")

IMO, BS is not an effective way to curb usage. If it were, the movie Reefer Madness would have nipped the whole nipped the whole thing in the bud. (Pun intended. ;))

When I was growing up, I was given some more objective, dispassionate info on all the major vices and I feel that helped a lot. (I've always declined to smoke pot - and drink booze among other things - with people who do it all the time.)

RE: eating. I asked a friend about this, once. Since he's very health-conscious, why always be smoking the stuff when IIRC pot smoke is at least as harmful to one's mouth/throat/lungs as tobacco? Apparently he doesn't favor ingesting because the high is more delayed & prolonged. For him, the buzz from a pipe hit comes & goes more quickly and he can get on with his day. (I'm not advocating either route - just passing his exp.)

However - short-term memory loss, likelihood of schizophrenia (even if it is still dependent on pre-disposition), paranoia, killing of creativity and desire to get things done or do them properly - these are the things that turn me off it and wonder why people waste their time, cash and lives on it, and i've seen them all personally.

I'm going to have to disagree with that on all counts.

I'm a regular smoker (which makes me anxious for the soon to be legal state in NYS [I suffer from chronic neck back and shoulder pain])

My memory is as sharp as a tack. It kind of has to be because I'm going to school to be a History teacher. Dates, times, places, quotes, and how they all correlate come extremely easy.

Never heard that it'd cause schizophrenia, that one is new to me.

I'd like to think I'm creative. I write, draw, paint, cook and compose music regularly. I get a lot more done than most people do and they're done right. I'm often criticized for being too critical of myself and others because I want things done right, and I needed them done 5 minutes ago.

Maybe all the stoners you know were already a bunch of lazy idiots?

In everything I've read cannibis performs equal to or SLIGHTLY better than a placebo for treating pain

I know a lot of pot smokers who think they're brilliant. Regardless, I've seemed to notice that roughly 50% of routine pot smokers I've met were operating at normal functioning capacity and some were permanently baked.

This certainly isn't limited to just pot, but I've met plenty of drug and alcohol abusers that were extremely obvious of their addiction and some who I'd never know until they told me.

I'm really not pro or anti pot, but most data that says it cures everything was designed to state a desired outcome.

You should try the placebo then ;)

here's a bit of anecdote on this topic:

I am allergic to basically every over-the-counter pain killer you can buy, and I also have no health insurance. As a result, I have at times resorted to using cannabis as a way of coping with chronic lower back pain (early onset sciatic problems) and although it doesn't fully "mask" the pain like a standard pain killer, it does VERY effectively limit and compartmentalize the pain enough to allow me to function in an otherwise "normal" capacity.

Now, here's the important part of my story:

I have at times been sold what is commonly referred to as "ditch weed," which is basically extremely low grade marijuana, as if it were the "normal stuff." For the most part it looks and smells the same as "normal" pot to any light user, but simply lacks the psychotropic (is this even the right word?) effects. To me, this seems like about as close of a scenario to a "placebo effect" as you're going to get with this sort of drug, and trust me, the difference in the "medicinal value" in regards to dealing with pain is quite drastic between the "real" stuff and the "placebo."
