Can't decide between a Fender Mustang and a Squier Mustang...

Pros of getting the Fender:

Nicer fit n finish, better quality parts, perhaps a little better sound. I could find one USED for about $5-600 on ebay or a similar site.

Pros of getting the Squier:

CHEAPER. I could get one NEW for about $250 on Amazon.


I'm trying to be wise with my money, but i want to be happy with whatever i get, as I plan to have It as my main bass for a long time. Anybody want to sway me one way or the other? :confused:


EDIT: I have decided on the Fender. Now i'm trying to find one. And a case....arg

Truth is that with the way things go regarding quality control with our friends over there at Fender, the better bass has nothing to do with the sticker on the headstock. Without posting my entire Fender history on here for the umpteenth time, I owned a Squier Jazz that was 1000X better in every possible way than a MIA P Deluxe I also owned.

With that out of the way, I would think hard and not let money be an issue. Even though you're not guaranteed to be buying a better bass if you buy the Fender, the Squier logo can mess with your head over time. :) You may never be able to shake the feeling that you should have bought the Fender. While I know it doesn't matter at all to some, I still believe if you walk into an audition and your bass has Squier on the headtock, it has an effect. Not always, but I'd never want to risk a really good gig because of something like that, and yeah.... it happens. You do have the option of getting the Squier and putting a Fender decal on it. People here love to do that. And start 64 page threads about it. I understand it's not that difficult to do, also.

Edit: After rereading my post it occurred to me that what smc might be saying is upgrade with a new pickup, bridge, tuners, etc.

Yeah I simply meant get the Squier (that Mikey Way one IS nice) to save your money now, then as you play and get a good feel for it, you can decide if and what you wish to upgrade.

And in the long run I imagine it'd be cheaper if you bought a $250 bass new and slapped a new pickup in it and maybe some tuners on it than it would be to buy a used bass for $600.

The used Fender will hold its value. If you decide in six weeks, six months, or six years its not the bass you want, you can easily get 90-110% of what you paid for it back. [If you don't overpay now.) I'm guessing the Squier will lose half its value.

I own both brands. But buying the Fender is close to the same as putting the money in a checking account. You can always take that money back out.
