Hello! I'll just quickly introduce myself now, as this is my first post. I'm a sixteen year-old BG player and pretentious music nerd from Canada; I play in what you could call an experimental or progressive (I don't like the term) rock band.
I've been composing everything so far, though I hope my band mates will help, because I've been incapable of finishing every track I've started writing so far. I usually finish a section, and then I have no ideas for the next one. Help would be greatly appreciated as I've been almost literally wrestling with these four pieces for too long (the first one is already 8 months old!).
Being a jobless student, I have no recording gear; as such, everything is sequenced. In other words, what you're about to listen to sounds horrible, more so in fact than the Jay Turser monstrosity I shamefully call my bass. Please don't comment on that, as everything will be recorded once sufficient funds are gathered; and please, for the love of all that is holy, don't say it sounds like Castlevania music.

Yes, we're welcoming. The more patient you are, the faster you will learn so try to be content with writing short pieces. If it's any consolation, most long pieces are just several short pieces without silence in between.

I agree with colcifer, just write all that you can without trying to write a masterpiece of progressive music. Just write as much as you can and at some point you may find that you have pieces that work with others. Challenge yourself to write a song that you are happy with that is around three minutes. Writing music is like any other art form, it takes tons of practice and you can't reasonable expect to just write something great and lasting right out of the box. Remember that prodigies are called that for a reason, they're not like "normal" folks.

I don't mean to write anything progressive or drawn-out, just to make music I like. It's maybe reminiscent of prog rock, but not aspirational.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I guess I'll keep trying, but I can rarely go over 2:00, unless I have a very long progression to begin with (third SC widget), and I can rarely complete them, so they're never complete 2:00 tracks. Also, since I'm already thinking in albums that are more than the sum of their pieces in the way the tracks relate to each other, it's discouraging to see tracks go nowhere when you can see them working with each other. Maybe I should take things more slowly.
