Capacitors in relation to a varitone type application

I like the idea of a high pass filter! That could be useful.

I think that on muzique.com you can find the calculator to find the frequencies. I tried to use it but was unsuccessful due to user error.

If you make any progress on either topic above, I'd love to hear it!

I've been scouring google for a while now and haven't been able to find some similar info, though this thread keeps coming up.

Ive decided Im building a box with a varitone for creating a low-pass filter and having another for creating a high-pass filter. I found this video on youtube and the guy shows different caps with different freqs that they cut off at. How did he calculate that? I want to have the high pass one do like 20, 30, 50 and maybe 80 hz or something similar...

Because we have a HUGE inductor in the circuit, you can't use a simple RC calculator to derive the cutoff frequency [oops, this was covered in #12].

The rolloff frequency remains valid, but as you increase resistance to ground, first you remove the resonant peak ... actually, sod this. Terry Downs has explained this perfectly, and you'd be doing yourself a huge favour by checking out his article here:

You'll need an inductor between the switch & ground.

Without it the switch acts just like a multi-selection tone control - simply rolling off the highs at various points.

You could achieve the same thing (almost) with a big capacitor & the right pot.

The difference most threads here misses is the inductor.

This retains some of the highs, completing the use of the Varitone into what it was intended to be - a mids-notch filter.

Want something else thrown into the mix? Remember that electronics have tolerances, they might not be the exact value it claims to be.

For a basic high pass filter you just do things the opposite way around from the low pass, you have the cap in series with the signal and vary the resistor value going to ground (as opposed to the cap going to ground). However, I don't think it'd work so well for a bass!
 
Where do you find suitable inductors for notch filters? I've been trying to (rip off the gibson varitone) make one for my guitar, but can't find any in the correct range.
