well.... judging by my username i am a bit of a beefheart fan.
Took me while to get in to Trout Mask. It was touted as one of the finest albums ever so i bought it. Listened to it a number of times and thought 'what a lot of pish!" I tried again a few months later and still thought the same. In the mean time i bought Safe As Milk and really liked it. It became one of my favorite albums and remains to this day. About a year after having bought Trout Mask i thought i'd give it another go now having two other albums. Somehow the penny finally dropped. It all made sense, like i had learned to listen to it properly or something. No idea what changed other than my perception of what is now what i regard to be one of the finest musical works ever. My openness to new musical ideas had been altered forever.
I know he hasn't released any new material for a very long time now but it still feels like theres going to be a great big hole in the audio spectrum.
RIP Don.
