That's awesome, I love it!

It makes me think of a guy here in Seattle that makes his own uprights out of automobile gas tanks. The one I saw was made from parts salvaged from a car destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. It was a three string and the neck was a tail pipe from the car. I watched him play at a corporate party and he sounded great. After their set I asked him how the neck felt (was it comfortable to play a tailpipe neck) He told me it played nice and insisted I give it a try. I'm not a double bass player, but I was shocked at how easy and comfortable it was to play.

I love eclectic homemade bass instruments. Hmmm. Maybe it's time for me to attempt building a Les Claypool styled "Whamola" bass.

I made a pickup from breaking open a Radio Shack Science Project Buzzer and soldering the wires from the disc to a common guitar jack, the pickup is duct taped with a small piece of foam to the inside of the box... the F holes are cut into the body for air movement... the strings are weed whacker twine guage .095 and .080 so the bass is actually tuned to A and D because of guage/tension.

i made a DBL bass, 2 string out of scrap oak flooring and a cardboard box. weedwhacker twine strings and water faucet spiggot handle tuners...

Man, it makes me feel like such a weinie to see someone being so creative with so little yet I need to spend a bunch of cash to soothe my feelings of inadequacy.

Sigh...

If you put me a 4 string, standard 3/4 double bass scale length, kit together, I'll buy it from you!

(Is that pathetic or what?...but I'm serious too.)

thanx, it's a fun project...
i just wanted to do one better than the washtub basses i've made and played.

just remember that the video of my box bass has a home made transducer pickup in it... i played it thru a Crate amp, and my video cam has a built in mic.

the deeper the box the more sound ya get.
THAT box is roughly 38" x 13" x 7" (a difficult find, indeed)
