I was just listening to my "Deluxe Edition of Mad Dogs and Englishmen", Damn. what a hot, funky rhythm section. Carl Radle and Jim Keltner kept all things extremely tight in a lose, big pocket kind of way. i thought I even detected Carl popping on "Hummingbird". Way cool stuff. What an under-appreciated band!

The more I examine my own playing, the more I'm surprised by who my REAL influences were, and Carl Radle may have to top that list. Not based on quality, but based on what I'm trying for on any given song.

Rick Grech did him justice on the Rainbow Concert CD.

Mad Dogs is a monster recording. Our band does The Letter.
They make that funky botton sound smooth and easy. (Our
sax player can rip that one up.)

Don't forget that band had 2 drummers. Plenty of rhythm section
there. Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon.

Hah, Don Preston played guitar - rhythm and was in the choir.
Now that is some Zappa trivia!

And as much as had been said about Leon Russel, I think the
force that Chris Stainton shows throughout the recording
and the film is unparalleled.

Stainton in all his incarnations, was an absolutely stellar player.
And he is still backing Joe up to this day, I have heard.

When I first heard of him and took in his extensive discography, I had the reaction of 'so that's who was making all those fat-back greasy basslines'. Great player. Yet another life cut short by Alcohol and drugs.:scowl: Too bad.

You've hit on a soft spot of mine, Carl Radle.

On of my favorite recordings of all time (I had the LP and now the CD) is Derek and the Dominos Live at the Fillmore East (the LP was called Derek and the Dominos In Concert).

Carl is great on that one, as is the whole band. Also, the 20th anniversary boxed set of Layla has a whole CD of unreleased long jams, some with Duane Allman, some without, that are just fabulous. And another whole CD of outtakes, etc. Great boxed set!!!!

Wonderful bassist, one of my favorites.

IIRC (a big "If")-

There was this Carl Radle interview(late '70s Guitar Player mag?) where he mentioned some Playboy music poll & how he was voted in as the 4th "Best Jazz Bass Player"...Ray Brown was #3 & Mingus was #5.
Anyway, he said he imagined Mingus calling up Brown & asking "Who the Hell is this Radle guy"?

Glad to see him mentioned here, twice in a week's time that he has been brought up... I played a gig with Randall Bramblett's band last weekend, his bassist and I were talking about him and his supportive nature in a band setting. Wish he didn't pass so soon.

If I might ask, what did he die from?
