And as much as had been said about Leon Russel, I think the
force that Chris Stainton shows throughout the recording
and the film is unparalleled.

Stainton in all his incarnations, was an absolutely stellar player.
And he is still backing Joe up to this day, I have heard.

By the way, Thor, Chris Stainton just finished up a tour supporting Eric Clapton. I saw them a couple weeks ago when they came through our town. The lineup also included Willie Weeks on bass, Steve Jordan on drums, and Doyle Bramhall II on guitar. Good stuff!

Carl was great. He was my hero when I started taking music seriously, I was listening to the first Delaney & Bonnie records what a great band. Years later I got to hang out with some of the OKC crowd some great musicians. I dig that picture of the Swingin Shadows I think that is Jimmy Karstein on drums.

Great Stuff Van. I alway's loved Chris' stuff, going back
to the original Grease Band.

As a footnote on the OK crew, Jimmy Karstein plays drums
on the 'Rainbow Concert' recording. The lineup was
Clapton,Townsend, Ronnie Wood, Rick Grech, Rebop,
Stevie Winwood and Jimmy K. Not a bad band to backup.

EDIT: I think I left out Jim Capaldi. DOH!

And it sells for about 10 bucks on Amazon. A must have
recording.

Carl was/is a big influence on me through the years. I think the Layla album was right behind the live Free & Allman Bros albums on my turntables most played along with list.

On the Mad Dogs video you can see Carl playing a old Tele bass with a P-pickup added to the Tele pickup, he also had foam under the strings by the bridge.

Bump because I recently picked up the Derek and the Dominos Layla Sessions 3-disc set and the Live at the Fillmore which I had been wanting for a loooong time.

Carl just has such a tight yet relaxed groove throughout all the tracks, especially the Jam I, II, III, IV, and V tracks.

Definitely a name that SHOULD come up more when talking about great bassists. If Clapton was the engine that drove the band, Radle was the frame.

...Don't forget that band had 2 drummers. Plenty of rhythm section there. Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon...

True . . . and I had the good fortune to record a bit with BOTH of them (one-at-a-time) back in the '70's!

...Hah, Don Preston played guitar - rhythm and was in the choir.
Now that is some Zappa trivia!...

Sorry to disappoint you . . . guitarist Don Preston NEVER (AFAIK) played or sang with F Zappa OR the MOI.
I think you're probably thinking of another old friend of mine, pianist/synthesist Don Preston, who DID play with FZ and the MOI . . .

That was a tour/double LP/movie that happened in the early '70's ('73?) - Joe Cocker with mad dogs and englishmen . . . Leon Russell was the "musical director"/band leader . . .
