LoL...yeah I don't post up much. Saw an article about him a few days ago so I got curious.

I only ever played one once, and it was 45 years ago; I believe it was built by Carl in 1976, was a fretless 4-string, and holymotherofgod it was absolutely the most comfortable bass I had ever played...then, and still to this day. 45 years later I still dream about how nice that bass felt.

But I was underwhelmed by the sound, and tbh nothing I've heard played on his basses in the ensuing years has made me think I would ever really want to own one.

The music store I worked at in the late 1980s had one. Fretted to the 12th fret, fretless above. We sold it for $300.

Frankly it did not sound very good and it had been sitting for a couple of years. 1986 Southern California was just the wrong place and time for that bass.

I played one once and was astonished at how great it played and felt.
Never plugged it in, and didn’t play it long since it belonged to someone else.
In my opinion, they ARE all they’re cracked up to be.
