Yay! Finally someone else feels the same way I do!
If it works for you...use it, if not move along and find one that does.
It's good to find someone here who agrees with me. Thanks.

I'm sure I am gonna sound like a complete fool for this, but, what is she talking about when she talks about chordal notes as opposed to scales? I am tempted to buy a book or two, but thought I'd ask here first.
Yes, she did get personal and abusive. I asked a question about studio bassists being asked to play basses other than their own. I mentioned the story about Flea and the Mars Volta where they asked him to play a Precision (and he did). I said I'd play any bass the producer wanted me to play if it paid and wanted to know if she felt that way. She got extremely mad and offended that I would dare ask that question, then told me the reason I haven't gone as far as I would have liked in the business is because I have no character, totally ignoring the fact that Flea, one of the most influential players of the last 20 years (like him or not, he's extremely influential), did exactly that. By the time I hit enter on my reply, the thread was deleted. 75 years old and way more influential than I am or not, I'm not going to take that crap from anyone at any time. She may have done more than me career-wise, but I certainly didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday. So I sent her a nasty email and told her to take me off her board, and I haven't heard from her or been back since. Bought about $100 worth of instructional materials from her 2 weeks before, too! Nice!
I used to feel that I should just shut up and take what she gives and be glad of it, but after that, she can bite me. She is definitely best worshipped from afar, way afar.
Her board is carolkaye.com if anyone wants to witness her brutality.
I wonder if Carol Kaye is a big Buzz Feiten fan?

I'm guessing she's more into those True Temperament necks.

Oh, I'd definitely rant. But I wouldn't rant about half the stuff she rants about. And I certainly wouldn't say someone has no character if they say they would play someone else's bass on a session. And I fail to see where I took a swipe at her with that question. You know JimmyM, I wonder how it would be if you had your own board? Would there ever be any ranting by you on it? Would you be absolutely corteous to every living soul even if you thought they were trying to take a swipe at you?
I can kind of understand her having a hair trigger when it comes to the whole motown thing and the woman is opinionated and most opinionated people that I know don't get along with some people in public and I'm sure that happens on line as well.
Carol doesn't like to use scales or modes to decide what to play. She likes using the chords entirely, and not bothering with trying to figure out what modes or scales to play over them. This isn't to say that she only uses chord tones, but she uses the chords to figure out what to play instead of trying to figure out what scales go with each chord. She is very much against what's known as "scale running," where a lot of people who use modes and scales sound like they're playing modes and scales in their performances.I'm sure I am gonna sound like a complete fool for this, but, what is she talking about when she talks about chordal notes as opposed to scales? I usually follow the chord, yes, then I make note choices depending on the key of the song, the chords immediately before and after the one I'm on, and what sounds good to my ear. You can make any note sound good against any chord as long as you pay attention to the context of the song.Well, since I play by ear and have no real knowledge of scales, I guess I follow the chord? I am gonna pick up a couple books and do a little learning.
You might want to read the big thread on fingering 1-2-4 in the Technique forum. The conclusion everyone seems to agree on is that 1-2-4 is fine, but one finger per fret and the 5-fret stretch will be a little more versatile when you need it. Carol seems to think using OFPF on the lowest frets will cause injury, but I've got tiny baby hands and never had a problem. You just have to learn the proper technique.I have a question for you guys. I just got some of her instructional materials today. One of the things she teaches is using the pinky for 3rd or 4th fret fingerings as opposed to the one fret per finger thing I learned as a guitarist, and still do as a bassist. However, after watching her thumb pivoting thing I see she actually gets a pretty wicked stretch with her technique. Do any of you play bass that way? Btw, a previous post said the material was disorganized and confusing. I didn't find that to be the case at all. There was a few pages of promotional stuff, but the sheet music, etc. was all together. The dvd looks like it was shot in the 70's though, maybe early 80's. Different production value than the stuff nowadays. I am liking it so far .

I try to look at it as seeming more personal, but that can get old too. I feel about the same way with Jaco's Modern Electric Bass...too much talking! Others love it. But CK gives you alot more for the $ IMHO.Yes, she did get personal and abusive. I asked a question about studio bassists being asked to play basses other than their own. On another note...your story about CK and Flea on the Pbass reminded me of how on KISS's Creatures of the Night album, Jimmy Hayslip was called in in the middle of the night to do the bass for at least 5 songs (he's not sure, may be more)...So Jazz great Jimmy Hayslip is sitting there with Gene Simmons telling him how to play the bass, and of course being a pro, Jimmy did his job and played what Gene wanted him to, how Gene wanted him to. I don't see how anyone could consider that as lacking character. It's being a pro, IMO. I think JH is doing OK as far as being a musician goesSo yeah, CK's thinking is very wrong on that subject.
As for why didn't Gene play it himself...2 reasons:
1. He was depressed because he just broke up with Diana Ross & didn't feel like it.
2. He's Gene Simmons and can afford to pay Jimmy Hayslip to play it how he wants it played, when he wants it played.![]()
