The buyer has used them for a few rehersals and two gigs, with no problem until the second gig.
Ok - that answers everyone's questions. The cabs worked - not just at bedroom volume, but for multiple rehersals and a full gig. We can assume they were pushed hard with that 2,000 watt head. And its possible one speaker quit and the buyer didn't notice, then another quit 30 minutes later. During a gig you won't notice a speaker going out - but you might notice a volume drop and turn up the volume more.
Lets all remember, a 2,000 watt head can put out its 2,000 watts at a relatively low setting on the volume knob. Boost some lows in the eq section, hit it with a hot bass, and you can get there quick - maybe say with the volume on "4" - and peak at 4,000 watts with the volume on 7. Just for example. I've had amps go in to protect mode with the volume at 7, thinking I still had more juice left.
Those cabs were seeing 1,000 watts each - possibly as high as 2,000 watts at times - not going to end well.
We talk a bunch here about "a 2x10 cab is all you need" or "no one needs more than a 4x10" etc. A bunch of that comes from having PA support. And the rest comes from the venue size and music style. I've seen blues guys play a 2x10 with no PA support in a small dive bar. I've also seen guys use an 8x10 cab, with PA support in a 300 person club and get lost in the mix!
Sounds like the buyer needed more cab.
Oh - some other things I see here a lot are "it doesn't matter if you run 2,000 watts in to a 300 watt cab - just use your ears and you'll not blow it" - which is accurate right up until the point it blows. Sometimes you can hear the speaker excursion too far and know to back down before you blow it, but with something like heat buildup, you might not get the chance to hear it give a warning cry before it goes silent.
