As others have said, play around with the knobs to get your own idea of how they work. Go easy on the boost, especially with a hollow body, ABG, or upright, unless you are purposely looking for a very colored sound.
There are lots of threads here talking about frequency ranges to cut or boost. Here are some suggestions you can use for a starting point.
Low Mid: a modest boost around 100-120 Hz makes for a fat sound. It's easy to overdo, and many bass cabs already have a hump in the response here. Go to lower frequencies for a reggae rumble, but watch the power if your cab isn't built to handle the low lows.
Mid: Try a cut (scoop) at 450 Hz or so. IMHO it smooths out the tone. Also makes room for the singer in the mix. Try it flat and scooped and see for yourself. This range overlaps with the Contour control of the BX heads.
High Mid: a slight boost somewhere between 800 and 1.2K Hz adds some "definition" to your attack.
