Carvin BX500: Pt. 3

A fEARful would really compete with a 4x10?

Generally, no.

A 4x10 is no competition for a fEarful in my experience.

Typical 4x10's fall far short of executing the bottom of the frequency band compared to a fEarful [though there are exceptions that come close IMO]. No 4x10 will function off-axis with comparable mid-range clarity and detail.

Hey everybody, wondering if you can help me with a problem. Just picked up one of these a few days ago, love the sound. Without something plugged in there is a lot of noise, but when i hit mute it all goes away, so this doesn't bug me. The real problem is with my upright bass. The sound is great and shapable with my jazz, but when my upright is plugged in, I just get the same hiss and noise, without any signal from the bass. I have a realist on it, going to the bx500 into a 112 golight, which is 8 ohms i believe. I have the head set with the 4/2 ohm button out. Has anyone had this problem? It is definitely not the bass, pickup, or cable, as I play through other amps all the time.

Thanks,
Furlong

Hey Furlong,

Did you pick this up used? Reason I ask because mine is on its way back to carvin with similar issues, but didnt surface until a little after a year of service. They were kind enough to extend my warranty being it was only up a couple of months ago. My problem originally stared with noise when the tube was engaged, and the mute wouldn't fix it. Then, it just turned to loud hiss where the mute did have an effect, but tube bypass, not. Passive basses would sound dead and muffled, while active basses still had some clarity, but the loud hiss was always in the forefront. I think I read a bit back where there are a handful of folks who are experiencing problems right around that one year mark. I know the board in mine is about four revisions behind what is being currently shipped. Good luck...

Thanks prokfrog, that sounds the same to me and is kind of bummer. Not only did I buy it used, but the Carvin website says they do not accept repairs from outside the US. Seems like a silly policy to me, since they ship there, but i guess Im kind of up against a wall.

hey Jarrett: "Not picking a fight, just curious, what amps have you found handle that work load well"

I have for the previous 15 yrs to this amp used a Glockenklang Soul head with multiple spkr applications depending on the gig. Before that I was a SWR user for over 10 yrs.
I also have lower powered tube amps such as Sunn, Guild, Ampeg-B15 etc.
I play hard rock and blues gigs a lot as well as jazz/cocktail gigs on upright. I want a warm natural / neutral sounding amp as I do a lot of different styles.

I really did like the BX500 just not the issues.

peace Kirk

Gotta get me an Earful of a fEarful some day...
